Toys and Games Reviews of 101 Piece Play Food AssortmentCustomer Review: Perfect for Little Tikes and Step 2 Kitchens Summary: 5 Stars
I was a bit skeptical after browsing the reviews for this play food set, but ultimately decided to go for it because it was created by the same manufacturer as my 2-year-old daughter's LifeStyle Kitchen (Step 2). I can assure you I was not disappointed and neither was she. The food is durable and the variety is impressive. I must say the picture, though not completely inaccurate, is a bit deceiving only because it shows items that were not included in the package (i.e., cans, boxes, etc). I would say though that what I received is better than what the picture above shows. All of the food is plastic - no cardboard boxes. Several of the items were duplicates, but I, for one, found that appealing because now she can serve two of the same meal. The variety included everything from hot dogs, to avacado, to sushi. The best part is that the food is made to scale with the kitchen, so it fits pefectly into the pots and pans included with the kitchen. Overall, I am thrilled and my daughter is begging me relentlessly to play kitchen with her.
Customer Review: Do not buy if you have children under 3 at home! Summary: 2 Stars
I bought this set for my son when he turned 2 and while it has a really wide assortment of fruits and vegetables and he had fun learning about some that he'd never seen before, it's really cheaply made and not at all durable. My 2 yr old put several pieces in his mouth and pretended to bite them (a logical step in playing "let's pretend to make lunch", I think) and after a few times they actually cracked (the banana is the one I remember clearly) and I threw them away. I also threw out the individual french fries and a couple of other smaller pieces as I think they're choking hazards. Well, today my 10 mth old got hold of one of the tomato slices and managed to wedge it wholly in his mouth. So I've just gone through all our play food and thrown away ALL of the items that came with this set. They're simply too small and cheaply made to be safe around any child that will put them in his/her mouth whether it's part of pretending or teething.
Customer Review: Good assortment for the $$ Summary: 4 Stars
I think this is a nice play food set. There are many different foods, including vegetables, fruits, breakfast foods and pastries. My son loves them. One caveat: if your 2 or 3 year old is still into putting antyhing in his/her mouth, you should purchase a set with larger items. The set is probably ideal for kids aged 3 or above.
I know some parents expressed concern about the number of unhealthy food choices in the set. I do see potato chips, french fries, burgers, pies, pizza, etc. Personally, that doesn't bother me. I felt there were just as many healthy choices and to be honest, is it really up to the toy manufacturer to endorse healthy choices? I respectfully contend that's my job as the parent. Nevertheless, if you think there are too many junk foods in the set, just take them out.
Customer Review: Amazon photo outdated, good play food set Summary: 3 Stars
The photo in the Amazon product description is outdated. The Step2 web site shows the current product (no cans/boxes, more plastic food) with an explanation that the items in the set have changed. I like the change - my 2 year old son would have destroyed the boxes and can labels in a matter of minutes. This gives him more food. Some of the items are things he doesn't normally encounter (sushi, shrimp) and we're having fun learning new foods. I was a little disappointed in the size of the food items - they're rather small. It works out better because he can fit most of a "balanced" meal on one of his platic plates and storage space isn't an issue. I just didn't expect all 101 pieces to fit in the equivalent to a standard women's size 8 shoe box. Overall, I think it was a good deal for the price.
Customer Review: likes the ice cream cones alot! Summary: 4 Stars
my child who is almost 2 takes them all out and plays mostly with the ice cream cone only. i got her some plates, cups and spoons to play with it to make more sense of these toys when u can teach manners by keeping food in a plate etc. also, showing how to cook, make breakfast etc and eat. but one thing i dont like about these toys is that the card board boxes which are a few in this are not durable. i have placed them in a bag for later use when she wont tear them up and will be ready to play with them a little better.another thing u wanna keep in mind is that 'cuz there are a lot of them, clean up afterwards can be difficult.so ideally for younger ones,a few of them at a time are more than enough. but over all not bad.promotes interactive and imaginative play.
