Toys and Games Reviews of Spinmaster Moon Sand Petting ZooCustomer Review: messy and fun - but doesn't store easily Summary: 3 Stars
Seems like Moon sand has gotten a bit of a bad rap when it comes to reviews. I agree that it is one of the messier indoor toys. You have to think of it like water play, play dough, and finger painting... all fun indoor activities for a rainy or cold afternoon - but requires supervision, or at least some prep work to minimize mess.
Moon sand is sort of like a combination of play dough and beach sand. It has more of the consistency of beach sand... but the sand grains have a finer texture, and of course are bright colors like play dough. You do not need to add any water to get the sand to "mold" into shapes, and like the commercial indicates, it doesn't dry out. I hear it can also be baked in the oven to harden the shapes - and then warmed up again if you want to re-soften/crumble the hardened creation (we haven't tried the baking part yet though).
The Moon Sand Petting Zoo set comes with a large flat house shape, a rake, a spoon type thing for filling the molds, and a foldable mat to play on; it also contains the following sand molds: a large barn shape, giraffe, monkey, alligator, haystack, fence section, boy, girl, elephant. You also get a bag of red sand and a bag of yellow sand
I will not critize this product for the mess factor, since I think that is part of it's draw... my absolute only complaint about this is that it doesn't store easily after it's first use. I hate toy sets that don't take into consideration how you're supposed to put it all away when you're done. Some play dough sets are like this too, but at least the play dough can go back into it's container. In this set, each color sand comes in a bag. Once you rip open the bag, you need to find something else to store it in. The molds to the kit also come in just a plastic package that can not be used as a storage case. We ended up using zip lock bags for the sand and tupperware to store the molds in.
I did see that there are some other Moon Sand kits that come with their own carrying/storage case and some that come with their own mini sand box to better contain the mess; so if you're considering buying a set for the child in your life, I'd recommend skipping this particular kit and instead getting a set that comes with better storage options. Other than that, I would have ranked Moon Sand a 4 or 5 overall for fun/entertainment factor.
Also, my husband was looking at the ingredients of the sand and apparently there is a warning on the package that because the sand grains are so fine, if you get it in your eye it can scratch the cornea. I hadn't really looked too closely at the ingredients so I tried a google search, and it seems difficult to find a good safety report on the sand. I did see some people comment that it is really bad if dogs eat it. Anyway, I think if you make sure to supervise your child's play, and wash up immediately afterwards, you probably won't have to worry.
