Toys and Games Reviews of Spin Master PixOs Super StudioCustomer Review: 5-year old son LOVES this! Summary: 4 Stars
My son absolutely loves this Super Studio. It's very easy to use. He likes that he can do it all himself, although, I do help make sure it is completely dry so that it doesn't fall apart when we remove it from the tray. The designs are very cute although we would have liked more pixos to come with the Studio...we bought it 4 weeks ago and have already purchased more. The only slight negatives are that you really have to wet the finished creation and squeeze some of the outside pixos in to make a secure bond...sometimes repeating this process over and over. Also, it would be nice if there were some purpose for the end product other than just a cute design. We purchased sticky magnetic tape and have transformed our designs into cute magnets that my son has given as gifts, etc. Otherwise, they kind of pile up after a while. It definitely keeps him happy, occupied, and is a good toy for working on hand-eye coordination...as well as working on creativity since you can come up with your own designs.
Customer Review: Worst toy, best marketing Summary: 1 Stars
I gave in, like I am sure many parents did, to the demands of my chidren for Pixos after they were flooded by commericlas for the great fun they would have. This is one of the worse toys and crafts I have ever seen - and I have three girls so I have seen every craft out there. 1) it is very expensive - you need to buy constant refills for them to be able to make many designs, 2) the balls are so tiny that they are hard to move and many end up on the floor, 3) they take forever to dry and, 4) when they dry they have no real value. At least the little plastic things that you iron can be made into ornaments, but these are flimzy and can't be used for much since they will fall apart.
Do not waste you money on this item, no matter how much begging!!!!
Note that these were recalled by the Consumer Protection for having toxins last year - even though it was corrected, I would not have these around small children who might put them in their mouth!.
Customer Review: Don't buy Pixos Summary: 1 Stars
We received this toy for a gift -- twice. The first one was thrown into the garbage (too late to take it back, but I never wanted to see it again), the second one we tried because my kids are a year older now and really wanted to do it. After one try, this one will be going back to the store, even though it's opened. It's an extremely frustrating toy (kids are 8 and 6) -- the balls are tiny and sticky, and the spaces to put them in are tiny. If there is the slightest "bump" to the project the balls all roll out of the holes and the project must be restarted -- very frustating to a kid after spending a tedious amount of time placing the balls. After the project is complete, they do not stay together all that well. Unlike the directions state, it needs LOTS of water sprayed on it, and lots of drying time, to even provide a hope of keeping it together. Not worth the money, the time, or the frustration level it will create in your kids. Thumbs down for pixos.
Customer Review: My 5-year-old's favorite Christmas gift! Summary: 4 Stars
I was absolutely not buying this after reading all of the horrible reviews, but my son REALLY wanted it for Christmas and it popped up in the Gold Box deals, so I relented. Knowing its faults, we sprayed his 1st design well, let it dry for 25 minutes, flipped it over, lightly sprayed and allowed the 2nd side to dry for another 15 minutes--came out perfectly. It's a bit of a lengthy process, but both my kids (5 & 9) have made several designs and they've all held up over the past few days--had to order more beads today. What's worked really well is having him do his designs right before bedtime and allowing them to dry overnight (no fan needed). If you have the patience and know the limitations, it can be a great activity--perfect for working on hand/eye coordination and fine motor skills. It was certainly a shock to hear after 3 Christmas celebrations and numerous high tech gadgets, video games and race tracks that this was his favorite gift!
Customer Review: Okay, not great Summary: 3 Stars
My 6 year old twins really wanted this for their birthday. I had visions of little beads rolling all over the house and was hesitant to get it but decided to give it a try. The first time the kids tried it they found it difficult and frustrating but once they learned to take it slow they started to really enjoy it.
I agree with others that the beads don't adhere very well unless you get them really wet. Then they stick to the tray. I have found the template cards that come with the unit work well for lifting the dried designs off of the tray. Just slide the card under the design and it peels off pretty easily.
A very frustrating aspect of the Pixos is the design trays. The holes are shallow and the slightest bump to the unit will send your beads rolling all over the place. My kids have had to recreate several pictures because of this. Still, if you ask the kids, they'll tell you they really like their Pixos.
