Toys and Games Reviews of Spin Master PixOs Super StudioCustomer Review: Having fun with PixO's Studio Summary: 5 Stars
After reading all of the reviews I was skeptical in purchasing this product. My son of 6 was asking and asking if he could have the studio after seeing it advertised on TV. I am glad I purchased this item for Christmas this year. My son has been loving this product. He has been doing a great job with a steady hand in putting the pixo's in the correct spot and following the patterns. Some of the patterns are a little bit more challenging and he has gotten a little frustrated and asked for help. The company has done a good job with the symbols of the patterns to let you know which patterns are easy and which ones are hard. My son has been patient but with the more challenging patterns as I mentioned I have helped him out. He has also gotten frustrated on if he bumps the station while trying to complete a pattern before spraying them the beads do come out of place. The he is having to almost redo the pattern. But he sticks with it to complete the pattern. I will agree with some of the other comments that not enough beads come with the studio and they do go quickly. After reading those reviews I stocked up on refills. It was pricey.
In addition, if they spill the beads do go everywhere. After completing a pattern I have sprayed them with water very generously. I have noticed though with the little fan and about 30 minutes they do tend release from the trays, but truly give them at least a couple of hours before they are actually really hard and then they will standup if 3D and feel more secure. I have had some beads not stick to each other when releasing the pattern from the tray but I have re-sprayed with water and then waited awhile to dry and then they hold. As the other comments mentioned to make sure all of the beads are touching. All in all I would recommend this product but I would say for 6 years and older. I can see how the younger children would get frustrated and not like the Pixo's.
Customer Review: Surprised Summary: 4 Stars
My girls (ages 4 and 6) received this from their grandparents as a Christmas gift. I always check reviews so once I read all the negative input from parents, I planned on taking it back for a refund. My husband laughs because I put so much emphasis on the reviews I read. My girls insisted on keeping the pixos so I finally broke down and opened it today. I thought for sure I would regret it. I had very low expectations but to my surprise, the girls have been playing with this all day long. The love it and I actually think it's pretty neat! Of course I took the advise of others and used lots of water (apx ½ bottle of water) to wet each design down. I then allow them to dry for 4 or more hours. Next, I slowly peel the design off the plate and flip it over to allow it to dry completely. If you follow these steps, the designs are very sturdy. We also have the pen/ storage set which has additional trays, pixos, designs to use while the others dry. (We have not tried the pen because the girls like the deluxe pixo dispenser pen). I don't really use the fan for very long because I think it has little effect but the girls enjoy it. Of course, my 4 yr old needs some assistance with placing pixos but she is able to use it better than I had expected. When the pen doesn't place the pixo in the correct space, all you need to do is your finger to roll it into position. Overall, I believe the kids would rate this toy a 5 out of 5. I will give a 4 due to some minor flaws. The direction of 5-10 minute drying time is obviously incorrect and it these directions were revised, I'm sure there would be more satisfied customers.
Customer Review: Fun but requires practice and patienc Summary: 4 Stars
My 7-yr old son received this item as a Christmas gift. After our first try, I thought "Oh, boy--it really is as bad as I have read in the reviews." However, after a few more tries, we got it to work and are having a blast making different things. We've made several small creatures and 2 suncatchers.
It does take longer than you would expect for the project to dry, and it is trial and error finding the right amount of water to spray on it. However, if the beads have a good connection, they are surprisingly well adhered together once it dries. (I know this because we needed to reuse some beads from a project to have enough for a suncatcher, and I had a difficult time pulling the beads apart--I found twisting them made it easier to pull them apart.)
I found wetting the project more than with just a mist and allowing it to dry for 1-2 hours seems to do the trick. However, this requires a child (and parent) with lots of patience. Sometimes the project needs a little touch-up with water.
The only thing I don't like about this product is how expensive the refill kits are and how few beads are in them. 500-750 beads may sound like a lot, but they go very quickly on a project. The suncatcher kit had 750 beads which was about enough to do 3-4 suncatchers that are apx 3 inches in width/height. At apx $15 for the kit, that makes it apx $3.75-$5.00 per project. Just a bit pricey in my opinion for a child's craft project. At the rate my son is going through these beads, he would need a refill kit everyday. Simply too expensive to do.
Customer Review: MY 7 YR OLD SON LOVES IT! Summary: 4 Stars
My son begged for this toy constantly. I read the reviews and absolutely loathed the notion of spending the money when I (thought) I knew it would be a waste and disappointment. I guess it all depends on the time you are willing to spend with your child and the patience of you both. We absolutely love this toy! My son was ecstatic when he opened it and set it up immediately. We have played with it and made designs until we ran out of pixos. (I will be picking more up shortly) The only gripes I have is that no, they do not give you enough pixos. It takes alot of them to make each design. To give you an idea: we made about 12 full size designs with the pixos from the studio and the starter set combined. The other gripe (be it a small one) is that it takes much longer than 5-10 mins for them to dry in order to have a good, strong bond. (we usually set them aside and check them later) Occasionally a bead or two does not bond and you have to spray it again and let it dry. Also a good point to remember is that you must have the pen almost touching the tray before dispensing the bead in order for it to land in the right place. My son got the hang of it in about 2 minutes. Overall, this is a great activity for kids who love doing arts and crafts on a regular basis, and who have developed the patience most crafts require. I would not recommend this for a child much younger than my own (having just turned 7), nor one who has difficulty focusing or sitting(or standing) still for 15 minutes.
Customer Review: NOT USABLE Summary: 1 Stars
Both of my boys, ages 8 and 6, asked for Pixos for Christmas. We purchased the Super Studio. It is now day 2 and the product is not working as advertised. Have spent probably 2-3 hours trying different things to no avail. We plan to send it back on Monday.
There are 3 major problems with the toy:
a) The wand that is supposed to suck the dots out of the well and place them onto the template does not work like it's supposed to. The dots get stuck, and you have to shake and shake the wand to get them to move.
b) After spraying the dots and drying, the designs do not stick together. We tried using extra water and increasing drying time. The designs are extremely fragile, and can be broken simply by placing them on the table. It's frustrating to the kids to spend a half hour on a design only to have it crumble.
c) Obviously the dots run all over the place. We expected this, and it's not a big deal for the 8 year old but we also have a 6 and 3 year old in the house which means spills are going to happen.
I would not buy the Super Studio again. It may be worth buying the manual Pixo pen instead, as this doesn't rely on suction to move the dots.
I would not buy this toy at all if you have kids younger than age 8 at home. They will get into it and you will have dots everywhere.
Overall recommendation, avoid. There are better art toys out there.
