Toys and Games Reviews of Moon Sand Treasure KingdomCustomer Review: Don't waste your time and money Summary: 2 Stars
I have given this stuff three attempts (tubs of plain moon sand, the farm kit and now this stupid castle thing)and they have all ended up in the trash. It is NOTHING like the commercial implies. It is MESSY... it CRUMBLES everywhere, it sticks to the kids clothes and hands. Buildablilty (is that a word??) STINKS, the "blocks" don't stand up or take half of your moon sand and you can make like 4 with the whole kit. The colors mix so easily that after a single use you have one big lot of gray-ish sand. I HATE this stuff and we seem to keep getting it for gifts, my only suggested use is when it is time to get someone back for something they have done to you, buy this for their kid! We use it one or two times then I tell my kids it dried up and we have to throw it out. We keep the gadgets and go back to the tried-and-true Play-doh!!!
Let me also say that I am not a clean-freak-make-no mess-kinda-Mom. We finger paint and glue and paste and color and cut and every other craft you can think of. I am not opposed to messes if they are worth the time and the kids gain something from it. But in the end my kids are so dissappointed in what they can create and I am so frustrated when I am vacumming this junk of of my rug (and they don't even play with it in a roon with a rug!)
Customer Review: Doesn't come with nearly enough sand Summary: 3 Stars
I bought this for my daughter's birthday because Moon Sand was on her wish list. I wish I had read reviews or looked at the package more carefully, then I would have known to buy a moon sand refill pack with it. There is not nearly enough sand to build a castle. It comes with four 10 oz. packages of moon sand in different colors. My daughter wanted to keep all of the colors separate. Even if she did mix them together, it still wouldn't have been enough to build a sand castle. I looked for the refill packages on-line. It seems to cost $15-$20 for each 5 pound bag of moon sand; hopefully that will be enough to make a sand castle.
As far as the accessories that came with it, they seemed to work pretty well, and look to be fairly durable. I didn't even bother with the inflatable sand box. Instead, I bought a snap-tight plastic box from a craft store for use as a "sandbox."
I'm not sure I will bother using more than one color with this, as I can see no way to keep them separate if more than one color is used to build something.
Once we get enough sand, I'm sure my daughter will have fun with it.
Customer Review: "No Mess" my A** Summary: 2 Stars
The commercials and item descriptions for moon sand say "No Mess." I know this because my 4 year old can quote the commercial word for word. The commercial LIES. After an hour of play, I have moon sand all over my house. This stuff is no different than bringing a bucket full of damp sandbox sand into your house and letting your kid play with it. Goodness help us if he ever figures out it comes in glitter colors too.
The 4 year old, of course, LOVES this stuff. I can't drag him away from it. The learning curve was minimal. In fact, he told me how to use the plungers. He picked one up and immediately started making "treasure" and walls.
I gave this 2 stars due to its gigantic mess factor and the fact it's freaking expensive. To sweep half of it up after each play session just makes me cringe. All I can see is money in my dustpan. If my kid didn't like it, I'd be giving it 1 star and taking it back to the store.
Customer Review: Usually worth the mess Summary: 4 Stars
First things first, yes, this product makes more of a mess than the manufacturer claims. My daughter is 5 years old and tries to be pretty careful with it, but still manages to spill on the floor. Cleanup for me takes around 10 minutes (skip the broom and use the vacuum).
That being said, on most days it's worth the cleanup time. She will sit at the kitchen table, away from the television, and happily/quietly create things out of this sand for a good hour and a half at a time. I like that she's using her imagination, working on fine motor skills and being so creative with it. Granted, there are days when I don't feel like dealing with the clean-up, and on those days I am honest with her - "honey, it's just too messy today & I need the kitchen table to get ready for dinner now." She's old enough to understand that. Usually, though, it's not a big issue. At least for 5 year olds, this sand is worth it.
Customer Review: My child loves moon sand and it is recommended by her occupational therapist Summary: 5 Stars
My child has sensory integration disorder and moon sand is something her occupational therapist recommends. It is a great product for her and she enjoys it a lot. It is not necessary to purchase a set like this, however. You can just buy moon sand without all the extra stuff. But when I was making this purchase it was on an extremely good sale and cheaper than just buying the moon sand so I bought the whole kit. My daughter usually plays with it more on her own than with the kit provided.
Despite infomercials, this product can make a mess. We just use a plastic tray and that takes care of the problem. You can also put down dollar store plastic table cloths and that would also solve the problem.
My daughter has had moon sand for a couple of years now-we keep adding more. It doesn't dry out or become hard like play dough.
