Toys and Games Reviews of Air Hogs Havoc Heli - Colors May Vary

Customer Review: Innovative product delivering great fun
Summary: 5 Stars

It is truly a marvel that Air Hogs has found a way to make an RC helicopter sooo cheaply, have it be so durable, and make it easy enough to fly that your average person can at least get it off the ground and fly it around a bit with about five minutes of practice.

Don't expect to be able to precisely control this helicopter -- it is so lightweight that it will be effected even by convection currents cause by it being cold outside and warm inside (in one room of my house, for instance, it is always drawn to the window, heh). But luckily, it is so durable you can have catastrophic crashes every thirty seconds and it just won't break.

Animals are terrified of it. Grown men giggle with joy. And kids just can't stop playing with it!

There are drawbacks, of course.. due to the cheap manufacturing process, the fins on mine are a little uneven and require some pretty severe trim adjustment every time its turned on. The battery doesn't last long before needing a recharge. And as mentioned, you'll never get truly precise control.

But we have to put this in perspective. Traditional RC helicopters are expensive, fragile, and notoriously difficult to fly. Air Hogs has found a way to mass-produce a working and very durable helicopter that is relatively easy to fly and safe for indoor use. That is an incredible achievement.

Customer Review: This thing is incredible!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this little heli for 20 bucks on amazon and it arrived last week. It is one of my favorite purchases ever. I have flown small rc electric planes for a few years now and eventually I looked into finding a good inexpensive heli. THIS IS THE ONE!!!!! When I took it out of the box I could not believe the incredible size. It fits in the palm of my hand. I charged it up, which took about 20 minutes, and took off i was hovering around my living room with ease. I have also crashed it into a few things let it drop to the ground a bunch of times and not even a scratch. To get a good feel for the heli try this. Hold it in your hand and slowly work the throttle up to full. You will hear an abrupt noise difference when you get to about half trottle. When you are taking of you should put the trottle up to at least the noise difference to be able to take off without rolling the helicopter over. Once you are up you can lower the throttle. I am good enough with this heli already that I can not only take off from my hand but also land in it. It is the perfect entertainment for the smallest space in your house. This heli also has a blue blinked led light on it which is very cool at night in the dark. It looks like a firefly! Overall this is an incredible little heli, and for 20 bucks you can't go wrong.

Customer Review: It Rocks, It Rolls (literally) and keeps on flying
Summary: 5 Stars

Purchased for $20.00 from Amazon. After flying it for the first time and having a blast I wanted another one, but now they are $25.00. Since it's the same price at Wally World I'll just buy my next one locally.

It charges in about 30 minutes and operates for about 6 minutes. It takes about 1 minute to dampen out your control inputs and then the helicopter can be flown around a room with some semblance of control. I've managed to crash it into hard and soft objects...it flutters to the floor and is ready to go again. It's probably better to just release the controls if you are about to hit something, rather than strike an object with the rotors spinning at full speed.

This is not an advanced collective pitch R/C helicopter. Don't purchase it thinking that it is anything but a very inexpensive, fun TOY. Older children who are patient and attentive will enjoy it. Younger children will probably not meet with much success...they may have more fun watching you fly it around.

It's worth $20.00 to $25.00. Purchase it for the pure fun of flying something in your living room. We don't have pets, but I would guess that one good dog bite or cat paw swipe would ground this thing forever so keep that in mind if your furry friend has a radar lock on your flying machine.

Customer Review: Watch the ceilings!
Summary: 4 Stars

Just got mine two days ago, I bought it expecting quick breakage. It's actually been a lot of fun so far and everyone I have shown it to enjoys watching it. It looks flimsy, is made of foam, but is actually pretty crash resistant for that reason. The blue flashing light is cool. The chopper goes up and down fantastically and you can also orient the chopper to face any direction. The main weakness is that it's pretty difficult to make it go forward in a particular direction-- so you are pretty much at the whim of whatever invisible jetstreams you have going in your house, or any random horizontal movements the chopper happens to make. I'm wondering if weighting down the front a bit might make it easier to go forward...

summary: if you want a quick thrill, buy one, but don't have expectations of this thing lasting for too long because it won't. If you want fun with friends buy two or three because they will be taking yours once they see how much fun it is.

update: I took 2 pushpins and put them on the front of the helicopter (landing gear!?!). With those pins this thing is unstoppable--it solved the flying forward problem I wrote about above. I am off to film a new version of apocolypse now with lighter fluid and my air hog. later.

Customer Review: Not too impressive, but still neat
Summary: 2 Stars

First off, I want to state that the Air Hog company should be sued right out of business for the TV commercial they aired showing this little chopper zipping around a house, up and down staircases, etc. What a bunch of CGI bullbleep! It flies, or should I say hovers, pretty well, but controllability is another thing entirely. I have even tried to alter the center of gravity in order to get it to fly forward decently, but have yet to get that to work very well. There are positive points, however. One, it DOES fly. 20 years ago this thing probably would have cost a thousand bucks or more, or would have been a military secret. It seems, so far, to be durable. The rotor blades have not, as of yet, injured either me or my cats. I'm impressed that the controller has a left/right trim function........ which even sort of works. It is VERY susceptable to air currents. Not just ceiling fans and a/c, but if your dog breaks wind in the next room, you will probably lose control, so never fly after a heavy meal from Taco Bell!

I'm glad, to be honest, that it doesn't fly that well....... if it flew 10% better, I'd be hooked, and I would have already spent 10 times as much as I did on this helicopter for a better one. Whew, that was close!
