My kid brother got this for Christmas or a birthday gift. Being interested in science, we gave it a shot eventually. Unfortunately, it was not much fun, and not very educational considering the results. However, educational gets two stars instead of one because it did teach us about maintaining a sterile working environment.
As another reviewer noted, the only scientific part of this kit is the set of four plastic petri dishes with gelatin and sugar to make cultures. Everything else involves mixing together some common household items in an effort to simulate biological processes... and it doesn't do a great job at that.
But to our experience... the kit simply didn't work. We mixed up the gelatin and sugar mixture as directed and filled the petri dishes as directed. Then once they cooled and congealed (may have been a bit watery for culture media), we prepared some samples. Knowing a bit about biology, I went for some guaranteed hits... nose, intertriginous skin areas, dog's mouth and the kitchen drain. I was meticulous, using proper smear techniques (while the instructions have you just "zig-zag" across the medium). After four days, all that's growing are a few spots of what's obviously airborne mold, and it's the same in all the dishes that are growing.
After sitting back and wondering what went wrong, I reflected on the packaging, which says "grow your own friendly germs"; note the "friendly". I suspect that Scientific Explorer doped the gelatin with an antibacterial agent to prevent kids from growing harmful bacteria for liability reasons. Possibly understandable, but extremely lame. Part of what went wrong in my situation appears to be that my sample locations were ones where you'd be more likely to find bacteria than fungus... perhaps feet would have been a better idea.
The short story is, if you're thinking about this... think again. You'll have better luck preparing your own culture media using supplies from a real lab supplier.
