Toys and Games Reviews of Schylling Jack-In-The-BoxCustomer Review: Jack brings back memories but I guess my kids were older Summary: 3 Stars
I've read that a child over 6 months should enjoy this toy with its surprise popup. Since my children enjoyed playing with Jack and listening to the Pop Goes the Weasel song I just had to get it for my grandson. He is a year old, not at all timid and was all excited to see a new toy. I had to turn the handle and show him how to turn it. When it first came up he was a bit surprised, not in a good way! He quickly tried to close it but it is very hard to stuff back into the box. I found it difficult too. You must be sure the song ends before trying to push Jack back inside. The box is fairly sturdy, although not quite as sturdy as the ones 20-30 years ago (what is?)
On the third try, I held my grandson's hand as we wound the handle together. He started to pull away and then quickly tried to slap Jack back into the box. Of course, it doesn't go right in. Anyway, to make a long story short the box is now sitting in a corner waiting for someone to get used to the Jack being around. Maybe it will be more fun when he is older.
Customer Review: Jack in the Box rewards patience and persistence with music and surprise Summary: 5 Stars
I read the Amazon reviews before purchasing the Jack-In-The-Box for our son's first birthday, so I anticipated he might experience some frustration trying to crank the crank. I figured his big sister would help with that, and that he'd grow into the toy this year. So I wasn't surprised when, after his sister and parents showed him how it worked, he wanted to make it work by himself, and became upset when he couldn't immediately master the motion of turning the crank. He's a persistent little boy, though, and would keep returning to the toy to try again. Imagine my surprise a week later when I heard the strains of "Pop Goes The Weasel" coming from his play area, and I saw him proudly smiling as he turned the crank all by himself! Now he alternates using hands to turn it and plays with it for long periods. Of course, he can't yet stuff the jester back into the box himself, but I'm giving him some time to work that out, too!
Customer Review: Jackass in the box Summary: 2 Stars
This is certainly a jackass in the box! I went and bought this for my 39-yr old fiancee for Christmas because her mother tortured her as a child and wouldnt but her one.She always wanted the original sound to block out her mothers screeching voice. Now that she finally has peace and quiet we were hoping to enjoy this Jackass in the box on Friday and Saturday nights. Little did we know that Jack would jump out of the box way too early and would scare the hell out of us. We felt like we were watching Elf!!! Then trying toput Jack back in the box our littlest critter at 2 yrs old got fingers caught in box. She required multiple surgeries in order to fix the problem. I know Jack has his faults but we still enjoy his company and he he makes for a great conversation piece even with all his imperfections so go out and git one!!!
Customer Review: My Granddaughter Ignores It but I Love to Play With It! Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this as a Christmas gift for my 3 year old granddaughter. It is really cute and acceptable quality - I love to play with it and relive my own childhood! However, not every toy is for every child, and this is one that does not appeal to her. She is bored and distracted even before the little clown pops out of his box!
However, my 12 month old granddaughter is fascinated when I play it for her. It is a perfect game to play with a very young child because the tinkling music is soft and the clown jumps out gently. It is fun for the baby without scaring her. I'm glad I like to play with it so much, because an infant needs it to be done for her while she watches.
It is a really cute toy, and I am not sorry I bought it, but it wasn't the hit I had hoped for.
Customer Review: Fun Toy Summary: 4 Stars
For some reason my eight year old grandson wanted a Jack-in-the-Box. He also has a younger sister whom he adores of almost 2. He was delighted when we got this box and played with it quite a bit, especially with his sister. I suppose the only down side is that, though the latch is strong for the top, it doesn't appear to be, so one is not always sure that it is latched well.
Since we also have a puppy German Shepherd who is teething, we have to watch out for the puppet in the box when we aren't around, so it is placed very high up. That prevents them from playing as much as they would if it were in view and easier to get to. When the puppy is an adult, I have every expectation that this will be a loved toy again, especially for the baby.
