Toys and Games Reviews of Penguin Race 2

Customer Review: Loud and annoying for adults (but kids like it)
Summary: 2 Stars

My 6 year old daughter desperately wanted this toy from the minute she saw it in Victoria when we were on vacation. We didn't let her get it then because it was so loud and annoying, so my daughter said, "that's okay. Santa will get it for me." She was right; Santa did get it for her. It was what she wanted most, but after playing with it for a few minutes, she decided that it is kind of boring (even though she still likes it). There's nothing for kids to do with it other than just watch the penguins climb the stairs (which is a very loud process) and then slide down the slide, and then repeat over and over. It is not interactive at all. For parents, it's very annoying because all you hear is a loud "click-click-click" over and over (it's the noise the stairs make) and it doesn't stop until you turn it off. Overall, it brought much joy to my daughter and reaffirmed her belief in Santa (because he got her a toy mommy and daddy didn't want her to get), but as I thought, it's very annoying and I'd love for it to disappear in the middle of the night or "accidentally" break.

Customer Review: Hooray for the Penguin Race
Summary: 5 Stars

I have 7 adorable grandchildren under the age of 6. I got this for two of them that live in MN, but gave it to them in the presence of their IA cousins. Upon opening it all 4 fell under the spell of the perky penguins chirping and making their way up the ladder and down the slide. The smiles appeared and the only sounds were their sweet giggles, laughing at the penguins antics. (FUN)
As it's mostly a watching toy, there was no fighting. At least until they decided to see what happened when they put the penguins on backwards (educational, durable). Not much as it turns out, the mostly stick at the bottom looking like they are kissing (educational?)
When my 33 year-old-daughter saw it, she begin to talk of how she had begged for one for years as a child so when I saw it for $10 on Amazon I got her one for Christmas. Don't think she appreciated it, but her kids did.
I think it's a darling toy that kids really enjoy watching. Kept them entertained MUCH longer and more effectively that I had thought it would.

Customer Review: Annoying sound, Fun for short periods of time.
Summary: 2 Stars

This toy makes the most annoying chirping/squeaking penguin sound when turned on. You can't turn the sound off. So it makes the annoyance factor of this toy very high.

That aside, this toy consists of three little plastic penguins 'climb' a staircase, then slide down the slide and end up at the stairs again to repeat the process... over and over and over and over again. There are only so many times you can watch this before it gets old. Even kids get bored eventually. Mine has more fun just playing with the penguins separately. I am amazed none have gotten lost yet as they are only 2 inches tall if that.

This toy doesn't have much going for it in my book. It isn't educational and it doesn't inspire much creative play, plus the annoying sounds it makes are enough to make one go batty. There isn't much you can do with it. The penguins are cute I guess, but I think you could find a better toy.

Customer Review: How to get the penguins to shut up!
Summary: 4 Stars

Great toy, but as stated, the sqeaker has to go. I did this simply by taking it apart and removing it. It's easy enough to do, just take all the screws out (all you need is a phillips screwdriver)and pull the 2 peices apart. You'll see a small clear plastic "accordian-shaped" peice at the bottom near the bottom of the stairs, it will have a black horn-shaped peice attached to it. Unhook it from the arm that connects to it (i actually unhooked the arm also so it wasn't just flopping around in there) and voila, no more squeaky penguins!

Now the stairs that take the penguins up is still a bit loud, but not nearly as annoying as *squeak* *squeak* *squeak* *squeak* *squeak* *squeak* *squeak* *squeak* *squeak* *squeak* *squeak* *squeak* *squeak* *squeak* *sq...ok you get the idea.

Customer Review: Once you get the squeaker out, it's hours of fun!
Summary: 5 Stars

When visiting friends, we noticed that this was the only toy that all the kids wanted to play with, and the only one that got fought over, so we bought it for ourselves. We were very pleased with the price but when it arrived, we were disappointed not to be able to play with it right away (you need one D battery). When we got the battery for it, we were really surprised (and displeased) by an incessant squeaking every time we turned it on.

Fortunately, the squeaking is VERY easy to fix - just pry open the bottom of the toy and pull out the small plastic squeaker (looks like a bellows), then pop the bottom of the toy back together. Done. Hours of fun await! I think this toy is on at least half of every day at our house :)
