I have owned a couple of Jack-in-the-Box toys and this is the only one that feels like the true classic. It plays "Pop Goes the Weasel" and is very smooth and easy to turn. Best of all, there is very little noise (no loud spring or opening mechanism) when the jester "pops" so it is more of a pleasant surprise than a startling jolt. I write this review for buyer beware....
I should start by saying my son loves this toy (got it for his first birthday as a gift and he is two now). He thinks it is one of the best toys ever.
However I hate this toy. I have literally hidden it away in a closet, because I'm tired of how frustrated he gets by it.
I call this a two handed parent toy. The reason being is that it is too difficult for my son to push the doll back in the box and close the lid. And the little latch has to be done playing the full song for it even to work. So it requires that I push the jester back in.
My son cannot play with this toy alone. I have to play too. We have a lot of fun when we do play with it and the tears really start rolling when we have to put it away. But to me it's not worth playing with.
Maybe I'll take it to grandma's house.

I looked at A LOT of jack in the box toys before buying this one, and this is by far the best I've seen. It's traditional, with a colorful metal box and a cloth jester. My 9 month old is fascinated by it. I've had no problems whatsoever getting it to work. And like traditional jack in the box toys, it teaches the skill of learning to play the song through before putting jack back in his box.

Purchased this for my 2 year old grandson. It is cute and works well-- but has a flimsy metal box and must be used with adult supervision. He loves it-- it is a replica of an old-fashioned Jack in a Box.
