Toys and Games Reviews of Radio Flyer Retro Rocket

Customer Review: s'okay
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this toy off of amazon.com knowing nothing about it, only judged the toy by it's picture. I was sold on the cutesy retro design. Upon receiving it I was a bit disappointed. From the picture I had thought it was a toy a child sat in- not on. I was also under the impression that it would be more durable. The body is plastic, and the chrome is merely paint. It scrapes and scratches easily. I suppose I equated the Radio Flyer name with durability and metal design. I had also considered the retro fire engine by Radio Flyer which I knew to be of metal body and had thought the two would be alike in that respect. The retro rocket was also considerably smaller than I had expected.

The sounds are decent and what you would expect from a toy that looks like this. It also has a vibrating 'lift off' button. After awhile it gets a wee bit grating on the nerves because it doesn't have a huge variety of sounds.

My 11 month old enjoys it quite a bit and that's all that matters in the end. I don't know that this will be a toy he'll grow with because of the diminutive size and cheap construction. I honestly don't expect it to last much longer than a year or so. For the price that's fair I suppose.

In retrospect I wish I would've shelled out the extra 20 dollars or so for the fire engine, which seems to be considerably more durable.

I rated it decently for the cool design and baby fun. Worth the money if you aren't paying extra for shipping. Unfortunately my local Toys R' Us doesn't stock them so amazon.com was my only option.

Customer Review: Grows with toddler. Also a great push toy!
Summary: 5 Stars

We got this for my son when he was 11 mos using a gift card meant for his 1 yr. birthday. We've had it for about 6 months and he has used it in different ways as his motor skills developed. It is one of our favorite toys.

WHAT MY 15-MO. OLD ENJOYS ABOUT IT:
-pressing the buttons
-opening the seat and hidding toys, dog food, blocks, etc.
-getting on it and pushing himself backwards a few steps
-holding on to the handlebars and standing on it Evil Knievel-style (hasn't tipped over)
-holding on to the handlebars and pushing it around the house with it facing backwards
-giving his toys or food boxes "rides" around the house as he pushes it

WHY MOMMY LOVES IT:
-waaaay cooler than a cartoon-themed car. I never bother to put it away when I know people are coming over. I love getting compliments on it.
-the sounds it makes are not annoying. I usually smirk when my son is pushing it and it says "approaching warp speed"
-my son plays with it alone while I clean or cook
-I enjoy seeing how well he has learned to steer it (as he pushes it from the handlebars) and maneuvers it around the dinning room, down the hall, in and out of rooms, even the bathroom (mostly used on hardwood floors)!

Drawbacks
-there is no on/off switch for operating it without the noise or vibration
-the seat flap does not stay open on its own so a 1 yr old would probably not have the coordination to hold the door open with one hand while putting something inside it.

Customer Review: Stellar Toy!!
Summary: 5 Stars

From the moment my son first set eyes on this toy at 11 months, it was love at first sight. Six months later, it's still his favorite toy. When neighborhood kids come over to play, it's the one they all want to play with.

Initial assembly was a bit of a challenge, and I had to get my husband to help coax a few pieces together. It doesn't scoot well on thick carpeting, either.

Other than a couple of very minor faults, it's hard to get my son to leave the Retro Rocket alone. He loves pushing it around the room, and hiding his blankie in the seat compartment. His face lights up whenever he rides it. He especially loves the countdown to blastoff and the lights and vibration.

I was talking with the owner of our local children's consignment shop, and she mentioned that she seldom has the Retro Rocket come in, and when it does come in, it doesn't sit for more than a day before someone buys it. I believe it!

Customer Review: The kids love it
Summary: 4 Stars

I ordered this toy from Amazon without being able to see it in person. The rocket is on the smaller size. I was sort of disappointed in the size. It is comparable to a little tykes push car. It is definately for a 1-3 year old. Though my five year old plays with it. She really likes to push her one year old brother on it. The seat/under seat storage hinge is plastic and seems flimsy. If you want to push your tot on it you have to hold on to the fins. They are not little tikes plastic. They bend a little when pressure is applied, so be careful not to break them off. It has great sound affects, and the vibration is an attention grabber. My kids love it. It is played with everyday. My son climbs on and grunts and rocks(his way of asking to be pushed around). No problems yet. It is pricey in my opinion. [...] I am glad the children love it.

Customer Review: Radio Flyer Review
Summary: 3 Stars

Not a bad toy for a 12-18month old but should not have cost as much as it did for what it does. Assembly was straight forward just don't try and do it the night before Christmas less you risk waking your litte one pounding the wheels on with a hammer. It should have been assembled already for the price. It does not steer at all so expect your toddler will smash it in the walls repeatedly. The seat could have been more contoured for little ones butts. It does have under the seat storage which is a plus for hiding additonal gifts. It has three buttons that when pushed play little sounds and phrases. They do get old quickly and should have been more varied. The front nose does not light up either which was a letdown. Overall okay but it shouldnt cost more then $30 dollars.
