Toys and Games Reviews of Radio Flyer My 1st Scooter RedCustomer Review: INVEST in the Mini Kick Scooter. It will last forever. Summary: 1 Stars
I was so irritated by thsi scooter that I posted thsi same review to the other scooter my son does have. My mother got my 4 year old the Mini Kick scooter and my 22 month old the Radio Flyer 3 wheel scooter. First of all, after receiving the RadioFlyer one, I can say it will be the LAST RF toy I ever buy!!! Garbage garbage garbage. I had debated buying that same one for my 4 year old after the reviews and was amazed it received such good reviews. Thanks to the anonymous review who recommended the mini kick scooter while I was reading reviews of the RF scooter. First of all, the two can't be compared, not unless you're comparing a rusty bike with a cannondale. One glides like silk, the other requires a lot of strength that my 22month old doesn't have. In order to steer the kick scooter, my 4 year old only has to lean his body to the side just a bit. In order to steer the RF, my younger son has to grab both handles and firmly rotate the handles. He lacks the upper body strength and even when I'm leaning over helping him, it's a nuisance because when it does rotate, the turning radius is a joke. For right now, my younger son understands the concept of one foot on the base of the scooter and using the other foot for pushing off. He just can't execute it because as soon as he puts weight on the RF, it stops. Plus the handle bar is 2 or 3 inches higher than the Kick Scooter Handle bars. It's a big difference. He can't both hold onto the handle AND lean down to push off with the other foot. My 22mo old is 31 inches. My 4 year old is 41 inches. When my younger son plays on the Kick scooter, he can do the "glide and push" method very easily. He doesn't quite have the balance to completely control the leaning and balance to stay on it but it's so easy to use that I can see him mastering it in a few months. My 4 year old mastered the kick within 30 minutes. Plus the wheels on the KICK scooter are huge but in a good way. You can tell it's made just the rubber roller blade wheels while the RF is just plastic wheels. In a few months, I will be selling the RF and buying a Kick for my younger son. On a side note, my flooring in my house is all tile. My older son doesn't even walk anymore. He uses his kick to glide from room to room. It's so tiny and thin that you hardly notice it while the RF is pretty bulky.
Customer Review: Great first scooter for a 2 year old! Summary: 4 Stars
When scooter envy hits your 2+/- year old because they see their older sibling riding or a neighbor - this is a great option if... they haven't been able to master or never tried a older scooter (like the more typical 3 wheel one made for preschoolers - 2 wheels in back or the 2 wheel version). If they can do okay or well on the other, I agree with some of the neg comments that this truely beginner version won't measure up. It is slower to turn and made of plastic and slower to ride. But that is what makes it safer for a noviced 2 year old to ride. Our daughter just turned 2 and we got the pink version at ToysRUs for her - she loves it. She was envious of her brother's that is the preschool type but had trouble getting it to work for her at this age ( the steering to quick and the whole thing too wobbly for her ability). So when we saw this in the store and she rode it in circles around the bike stands for 40 min while we looked for a bike for our older son, we couldn't resist getting it. It is more challening for her on the sidewalk but she still is riding it. Hopefully she continues to enjoy it the whole season and if next year she wants more of a challenge we can get the preschool one. So - if you want it for a toddler great but if that child can already do the older scooter than stay away from this one. And although it is made of plastic - I will say this - Radio Flyer will replace any broken parts for free if you just call them. I had a handle on a bouncing pony bend because a child that was too old was too rough with it and they sent me a new one - no problem - no cost.
Customer Review: Great for little ones to learn balance Summary: 5 Stars
I got this when my 3 yr old was 2...she really mastered it about 2 and 1/2. I got this because her brother 7 at the time was always riding his razor scooter and she felt left out wanting to ride his. At first it was awkward for her and she would bring it out now and then...Her brother and his friends would grab it and ride it until I told them it was for her only, and if she caught them on hers, forget it, there was alot of 2 yr old screaming. But now at 3 she rides it a lot and is really good at it. I used to teach preschool, and this is definitely good for balance, self esteem, and large motor skills. If your child isn't an expert on it the first month or 2...it is OK. I read some of the reviews of how pple complained it was unsafe, but REALLY???? So can playing on a playground climbing stairs to go down slides, or trying a big swing for the first time...life can be a bit challenging for the little guys. That is what practice is all about. Boy, if you get crazy overprotective now with this scooter, forget roller skates, bikes, razor scooters, skate boards or anything else that kids have to try out for the first time and have lots of falls along the way. And of course it doesn't turn on a dime...the front wheels are supposed to be far apart to have a little stability.
Customer Review: It's not as smooth a ride, and harder to steer, than models with 2 back wheels Summary: 2 Stars
My four year old really struggles with this scooter. Sure, it doesn't go fast. The wheels seem uptight on purpose. But with the two wheels in the front, and the design of the handlebars, it makes it difficult to steer, too. And when my younger son gets too tired and cranky to propel himself back home from the park, the handlebar is impossible for me to help him out, because I end up mis-steering all over and running over toes.
I much prefer the Spider-Man Preschool 3-Wheeled Scooter my older son wore out between age 2 and 5. It had 2 wheels in the back and one in front, with Razor-type straight handlebar, which I found at a steep discount. When he got tired of propelling himself (not often), I could just grab and pull myself. I even got my own two-wheeled Razor scooter that he inherited, and we rode together with me sometimes pulling him along, on his three-wheeled scooter from another brand.
I don't recommend the Radio Flyer. I've been disappointed with both the scooter and the tricycle's cheap materials and impossible maneuvering.
Customer Review: Don't get it if your child has ever used a scooter before Summary: 1 Stars
My 6 year old daughter has a 3 wheeled scooter that has 2 wheels in the back and one in the front. Very safe, very easy to maneuver. My 2 year old would use it too and loved it. I thought getting him this scooter would be a great idea for Valentines Day because it was red and looked really stable and safe. Well, he HATED it. You can barely turn the front wheels, you can't to around corners and the handles are high. After a week of him using it a total of 10 minutes, we brought it back. We're going to go with a 3 wheeled scooter that matches his sister's. I wouldn't recommend this for any child that is used to easy maneuvering of a scooter for they will get frustrated and hate it. It's perfect for kids who are just learning to use a scooter, but I have a feeling they will get bored after a while and want to move up. I'd start with a different scooter instead so they can use it longer. If my 2 year old can use the 2 wheels in the back, one in the front, I'm sure any kid can and I'd invest in one of those instead.
