Toys and Games Reviews of Radio Flyer Classic Walker WagonCustomer Review: Great choice for helping an early walker! Summary: 4 Stars
After poring over the existing reviews for this product and others in the category we purchased this for my son as an alternative to all the plastic noise making walkers out there. (Happily it was on sale through Amazon at the time). I looked at the Melissa and Doug alligator walker in a store and found it to be too flimsy and small for what we wanted. There are some other very nice wooden walkers (car style) out there (mostly European made) but most are quite pricey and this one seems to have greater potential use down the road.
When we introduced our son to this walker he was about 7.5 months old, pulling himself up on everything in site, and trying to walk. He was instantly excited when he saw it.
I will say that I thought the clickers (which provide the "resistance" mentioned on the product summary) would keep the wagon from moving forward as quickly as it can. Luckily, since it is constructed so sturdily he could pull himself up to kneel on his knees and then stand and he figured out how to keep up with the wagon and push it before it could get away from him. This did take some practice on his part and some steadying/holding of the wagon on ours. He is heavy for his age so smaller children may not have this problem but note that it can get going rather quickly as they transition from sitting to pushing it forward.
One funny thing is that he likes to take the sides off and sometimes try to put them back on but pretty much the sides stay off. This may change when he gets older. Right now he likes taking the sides off and crawling in and out of the wagon as well as standing up in it to get up a bit higher.
Pros: 1)Fairly easy to assemble--I finished putting it together while he was napping; 2) Well constructed; 3) The "bumper" really works to protect the walls and furniture (we have not had any of the problems with markings being left on the walls mentioned in other reviews); 4) It is very stable he actually likes to climb into the wagon now and stand in it, due to the way the rubber wheels work he is in no danger of rolling forward unexpectedly since it just rocks back and forth a little bit.
Cons: 1) While it is fairly easy to assemble, the directions are a little bit opaque with regards to identifying the different screws and washers accurately; AND 2) You need the right tools--I recommend a socket wrench --to tighten the wheels properly--we had to tighten one of the wheels before it fell of after about a week of vigorous use; 3)The reason I gave this 4 stars rather than 5 is that it does not steer easily at all since the wheels do not turn they only go forward or back but it goes gang busters in a straight line and if you help your child "steer" it in circles.
The wagon can go outside but the rubber wheels will get scuffed. It rolls well (very smoothly)over carpet and other surfaces.
Ratings: I gave it 4 stars for fun but you will need to help your little one steer until he or she gets big enough to figure out how to lift the back and wriggle the whole wagon in the right direction to change course. Otherwise they do have a great time dashing along in those straight lines. I gave it 3 stars for education since it is more of a gross motor skill aid. I gave it 5 stars for durability (so far). Overall I rate this toy at 4 stars since it may be a little too easy to remove the sides and the clicking sound does get a little bit annoying sometimes.
That said we are really quite happy with this product. I would definitely buy it again and I would recommend it to a friend, just remember that it does not steer. Almost 2 months later our son can walk about 10 to 12 feet at a time without help (no walker) but he is still enjoying this classic very much and we hope he will continue to do so.
