This kit is basically a re-issue of the 1966 1/72nd scale original. The major differences are the inclusion of the D-21 drone and a subtraction from the first issue: there is no longer an option to create the A-12 "interceptor" variant.
The re-issue does not correct the biggest bugaboo in this kit: the wing-to-fuselage fit is poor. There is a noticeable step up from the fuselage to the wing. The fix is up to you; either file the wing to a thinner edge, or build up the junction with epoxy or putty. The kit is molded in thicker than usual plastic due to its large size. The plastic will endure much cutting and sanding to get things the way you want them.
Another feature that needs improvement is the main landing gear. The plastic assemblies seem heavy and klutzy. A re-work with wire struts
and filing the tire and wheel assemblies to a thinner cross-section vastly improved the look.
The decals may frustrate you. They are accurate in size and color, but getting them to plaster down flat to the wing corrugations is a problem.
There are decal softening after-market products which might work.
When you are done, you will be impressed at the sheer size of this model.
Scale fidelity is right-on, although panel lines are absent. When the kit was first issued, you were basically stuck with a fairly sterile model. The recent avalanche of reference materials should enable you to super-detail this kit. Access panels to the fuselage and engine pods can be isolated and cut open. Look upon this kit as a black canvas that is aching for your brand of artistry.
I would rate the skill level required to produce an impressive display model as raw beginner, as there are no fiddly-bit tiny pieces in this model. Also, the color scheme is monochromatic, an easy paint job. Still, a blackbird fan could create a virtual masterpiece.
