I bought this for my twelve year old for Christmas. He was able to build it on carpet and on our hardwood. Though, I do admit, the taller he made it on the carpet, the more wobbly it was. So we began building it on a sturdier surface. We didn't have any issue with the marbles not running. They did occasionally get stuck, but send another two or three marbles down the top and they started going again. My son played with this for hours and STILL, after almost a year, pulls it out to build mazes. We bought him three sets total since they don't come with very many pieces and the more you have, the bigger and more creatively you can make the maze. He loved this so much he suggested getting it for his two cousins this year.
