I was instantly hooked by Rummikub when I first played at my friend's party. While I could pick one up at local Target for a penny short of a Hamilton, I have decided to see if this deluxe version would offer better plastic. Well, the reality was worse. The plastic didn't look as finished as the less expensive counterpart. Although the carrying case is a brilliant idea, it is hard to use and lock. There is a little timer that comes along with the box, but I rarely use it as it is impractical since not everyone would use up the whole minute -- while I would admit timing the game makes it more fun, this timer is a good thought to start with, but again, like the rest of the parts, it is poorly implemented and not well thought through.
The bottom line is that, unless you have a few extra dollars you really want to help the economy, you should just go to Target, get the game tonight instead of paying extra for this product.

This top quality set is specially designed to give millions of Rummikub fans added enjoyment. Similar to the Rummy that you play with cards - you try to get rid of all your tiles by forming numbers into runs of 3 tiles or more, or 3 to 4 of a kind. The colors of the numbers on the tiles are like card suits. This game may start rather uneventfully, but when the players start putting more and more tiles on a community playing area, the machinations of playing out your tiles can become quite complex. Includes 106 tiles, four playing racks that convert to a carrying case, timer, and instructions. For 2 to 4 players.With rules similar to gin rummy, Rummikub is a classic tile game that's guaranteed to get at least a million kid-hours of use in any family. Players take 14 numbered tiles and try to get rid of them as fast as possible by creating runs (for example, 7-8-9) and sets (7-7-7). The most fun aspect of the game--and the part that's best for creative strategic thinking--is that you can pilfer from and rearrange the efforts of other players in your attempts to part company with more tiles. This deluxe edition is cleverly designed so that the four plastic tile racks fit together to form a carrying case for the game. --Richard Farr
