Toys and Games Reviews of Tinker Toy 200-piece Plastic Construction Set

Customer Review: An improvement over the wooden ones!
Summary: 5 Stars

I was wary of getting plastic tinker toys, but we've been pleased with how they've held up. I saw numerous reviews on the wooden once with complaints about breaking and splintering, and we haven't had any pieces tossed out yet after more than a year. These are the only toy in our house that is played with each and every day, by both of our children. We make lawn mowers (my son's favorite), snow blowers, baby swings and strollers(for my daughter's doll), airplanes, buildings, scooters, umbrellas, flowers, animals, you name it. My 2 year old has no trouble manipulating the pieces to make simple things (the flowers and umbrellas are her specialty), and my 4 year old gets more and more creative about how he accomplishes things. Definitely worth the money and tripping over them all of the time. My husband and I are getting better at making things too... he's downstairs making a BBQ grill out of them now!

Customer Review: Excellent toy
Summary: 4 Stars

My son received this toy for his fourth birthday, and he has been playing with it almost continuously ever since. It is a great toy to encourage creativity. The advantage of the plastic parts is that, when they break, they do not form sharp points like the wood ones do. The only downside is that the plastic is not as durable as it should be. Within a few days, some of the rod ends were cracking (I have to admit that my son is not gentle with his toys). I think they could use a slightly heavier plastic on the rods to rectify this problem.

As far as I could find, the plastic Tinker Toys are only available at Toys R Us, and only in this package. The plastic and wood are supposed to be compatible, except that the plastic rods won't fit in the wood spools, because they are not notched (per Hasbro's site).

Customer Review: Toy was a hit
Summary: 5 Stars

I had bought this toy for my son's 8th birthday and it was a hit. I have three children and they all loved it. It's been three weeks now and they still play with it daily, it was a definate hit. My only disappoints were: They are plastic now, instead of wood. I recall as a kid, breaking the wood ones now and then. But the plastic is just as breakable, yet without the typical peircing points a broken wood one would have. I bought the large 200 piece tin of them, when I opened it up 2/3rds of the tin was nothing but air (they did take the time to add in cardboard so you wouldn't know.) I was disappointed such a large tin was so empty - but nontheless, the toy was a super hit. I wish I had bought them earlier.

Customer Review: Hard to fit pieces together
Summary: 2 Stars

Purchased this after my daughter created several "inventions" with her brother's set. We wanted more pieces for her. This set is plastic, the other is wood. I am not impressed at all with the plastic pieces. Many of them were hard for me to fit together and I am quite strong. The plastic pieces also bend--their wooden counterparts do not. The pictures of things to build that come with the kit are in color--but the pieces do not necessarily match the picture..i.e the pink rod in the picture may be the blue rod in the kit that is the same size. Made building the ferris wheel extremely annoying. Will likely return this kit and get more wooden sets.

Customer Review: A classic but some reservations with this set
Summary: 4 Stars

Like someone else mentioned, the lack of instructions was a bit frustrating. Our 3 yo wanted us to build the "robot" on the box and it would have been nice if there was more to go on than just the picture. (My husband was able to do it though). So, that is disappointing.

Another issue I have with this set that if you go to Toys R Us this is the only all plastic set on the shelves. The rest are the classic wooden ones (which we meant to buy, actually). I assume they are interchangeable but I haven't double checked that yet. It would just be nice if there were some smaller plastic sets available too.
