Toys and Games Reviews of Music & Lights Sit 'n Spin: Rockin' Tunes

Customer Review: fun toy, annoying noise
Summary: 3 Stars

Our 23-month-old daughter got hers. As a number of reviewers noted, the music is loud and annoying and does not come with an off switch (though it'll turn off after a while, and one can just not press the top of the Sit 'n Spin which turns it on, but the child of course WILL press it). She didn't seem to like the music either--she asked me to take the batteries out. But I found a nice arrangement: I cut one of the wires leading to the speaker (they're easy to see when you open up the battery compartment) and now it has flashing lights, which she likes, and no noisy music, which everybody dislikes. (Why they couldn't put a in slider switch for it, I don't know--it would probably add two cents to production costs.) A bonus is that I assume that with the speaker wires the 3 AA batteries will last for a long time--four red LEDs don't take much power!

Anyway, it took her a bit of time to get the hang of spinning herself, and she does like it. She's not utterly enthusiastic, but it clearly IS fun and looks good for motor development. And today she was entertaining her toy puma with it, so it looks like she can use it for imaginative play, too.

All in all, decent but not outstanding. It probably all depends on the child's interests.

Customer Review: A Classic that Has Been Turned Into Junk
Summary: 2 Stars

This toy has probably been around for years, and the concept is fantastic. I bought this for my son because whenever he went over to other childrens' houses he loved playing with it. They had older models, without the music. This latest edition, despite the new "tunes" and the very affordable price turned out to be a real letdown. The construction is so cheap and flimsy that it tips over! My son is quite small for his age (3 years) and so I know that weight/size had nothing to do with it. The problem is that the base (where the children sit) is too light and so when they spin around the opposite end kicks up, throwing them off the toy. I had never seen that on the older models my child played on. Those have heavier bases and this anchors the kids down better. As for the music, it looked like it could become really annoying so we just never installed batteries.
If you are looking to buy this toy now, I suggest you wait and urge others to, so that maybe Playskool will understand that adding "music and lights" isn't going to make the toy more popular when they compromise on quality. Maybe then they will focus on keeping it a quality durable toy instead.

Customer Review: Fun for the kids; too noisy for Mom!
Summary: 4 Stars

I was going to buy this Music & Lights Sit 'n Spin: Rockin' Tunes for Devon for his first birthday last January, but his mother beat me to it. He's been spinning on this for eight months and still loves it. What a treat to observe that adorable little guy playing and enjoying every minute of life. His laugh is pure joy as he spins around, his smile brightening the faces of the entire family.

This toy has held up well, which says much for its durability because Devon's a pretty rough-and-tumble kid ... as boys should be, of course. ... lol ...

He loves the music ... much more than his mother does, so I'm going to suggest she take the advice of another reviewer and remove the batteries. I'm certain Devon would still have fun with this classic--music or no music.

Devon recommends it highly! Mommy recommends it with reservations about the too-loud music, so I'm giving it four stars.

Customer Review: Surprisingly disappointed!
Summary: 3 Stars

After buying the sit and spin for our children (18 mo & 5 yrs) for Christmas this past year, I was VERY disappointed at not only the durability, but the size!! My brother and I had one, along with my husband and his siblings, and we are all convinced that this is SMALLER than the old ones AND the quality, durability of it is very shoddy! My children CANNOT stay on it. No matter what they do. Even when we have our friends over, their children have the same problem! Very DISAPPOINTING! For $... I would NOT recommend buying one. It plays music, which is great! But it seems that it NEVER shuts off! Not to mention there is not an on or off button for the music. Like I said, one childhood fasination to one childhood letdown. POO huh! Weel,it is easy to manuver for even the littlest children!! Try it, you may like it, but don't get your expectations up if you hoped your children would have as much fun on it as you did when you were a child!! I'm giving it a 1 star for durability because it won't allow me to give it a zero!!

Customer Review: Fun toy, but annoying
Summary: 3 Stars

We received this as a gift for our 18 month old daughter. Within a few days she was able to sit and spin. She love it!

We still have it 2 years later and it has held up to many children playing with it. Very durable.

I gave it 3 stars because there are some things which we do not like:

1. There isn't an off switch so every time the child plays the music will play. It does get annoying for parents but it also gets annoying for the child. My daughter will often put her hands over the speaker. She likes the toy for the spinning, not for the music.

2. There isn't a volume button. It is loud and your child's head is right near the speakers

Some people have given it a low rating because their child will stand on it. True, kids love to climb, but that isn't a defult of the toy - as with all toys, parents need to watch their child while playing.

It's definitely a fun toy, but I would rather get a version that does not have music.
