As a supplement to my son's growing collection of Playmobil pirates, the Treasure Island Set was given as a birthday present. William's hooked on the pirates, and he can't get enough of these play sets.
Playmobil make awesome toys. The quality is unsurpassed, and I'm particularly pleased with the creative aspects of these sets. For instance, one of the coolest items in this set is a message in the bottle. Most companies would throw in a small plastic bottle and be done with it, but Playmobil built a 3-piece message in the bottle combination. The bottle is shaped like a wine bottle of the day, it has a bottom, and an actual paper message that's to be rolled and placed in the bottle. Some of the other items are a treasure chest that actually works. You slide a lever, and it locks. The skeleton glows in the dark, and happens to be my boy's favorite item in the set. All you do is place it under a light for a minute or so, and it glows neon green.
Playmobil sets are pricey. I balked when pricing them initially, but have come to understand their value. When buying Playmobil, make sure to set aside the insert, as each item is catalogued, and can be replaced if lost. The detailing in the pieces is fabulous. I wouldn't recommend this set as a stand-alone piece, but in a collection, it adds to the imaginative play.
