This is an absolute waste of money. The instruction manual is in French. The web cam is incompatible with my computer. The slides are atrociously made. The device itself is nearly worthless, and its construction is shoddy. It was not expensive. But even for the price it is a waste. Shame on the manufacturer and the distributor. Shame on the BBC for lending credibility to a product that is worthless. I will never buy another item made by "Planet Toys", or "Planet Earth", if they even still exist, or endorsed by the BBC, or with the "Love Earth" logo. What an utter and complete failure. I purchased this "microscope" for my daughter for Christmas. I was a little disappointed with the digital portion. Using it as a regular microscope worked as expected but I can get any old microscope to do that. I really wanted the digital portion to work well and get my daughter interested in this type of science. I was never able to get crystal clear images of what I was looking at (like on the box). Instead it was blurry and overlit.
It may be that I received a defective unit but I have yet to receive a reply from the manufacturer after several emails regarding this issue. I recommend that you pass this one up.

I purchased this as a Christmas present for my 8YO son. Web cam does not focus - yes you could make out that it was a person but it was so fuzzy he could have been an alien with two heads and you'd never have known. Microscope's eyepiece is so small he could not see anything or focus. I tried and did better but not much. Poor quality product. At $50 I expect this to work as an elementary school level microscope. At $10 I still wouln't waste my money. Very disappointed as my son was so excited when he open it. Don't know if I can return as I purchased in late October (yes I shop early for christmas!!!). Planet Earth Toys is aparetnly out of buisness so you can forget about tech support for the web cam. You can find older versions of the driver on Cnet and the like. As for the microscope, the optics are suprisingly good. The only probelm is you can't adjust the light intensity, so while the maximum zoom is 900x, you can only really use it at 300x max. It's fun for the budding scientist, but I wouldn't buy one for any kid over 8 or 9. If the child in your life is mature enough and has a real intrest, spend more money and get a real microscope, not a toy one.Customer Review: fun AND educational!

I really can't say enough about this toy. I originally bought it for my nephew (7 years old) and he immediately loved it. I say "originally" because his older brother (9 years old) AND younger sister (6 years) both enjoy it equally as much. The most amazing thing about it is the age range. This item is easy enough to use for a 5 year old, but feature rich enough to hold the attention of a child far older. I have seen it in specialty stores for 79.99, so amazon is definitely a bargain. With Christmas coming up, I plan on buying several of these as gifts!
