Toys and Games Reviews of Plan Toy Solid Wood DrumCustomer Review: Nice drum for very little ones Summary: 3 Stars
I bought this drum for my ten-month-old daughter. The top of the drum is carved out to make, roughly, xylophone keys (not sure how else to describe them) -- little tabs of wood of different lengths that produce different tones. Much like the Plan Toys Xylophone, which we also have, it's made of solid, thick sturdy wood. This is good because I feel pretty safe giving it to her insofar as I don't think she can wreck it at her age. On the down side, this also makes it heavy -- I wouldn't like her to drop it on her toe. Another effect of the thickness of the wood is that the shorter piece don't really sound musical, they sound 'blunt' or 'flat' more like tapping on a wooden table.
Another minor problem is that there are three little rubber feet on the base (I think four would have been better). When the baby leans on the edge of the drum, it tips very easily. As I said, it's heavy and solid, so I stick pretty close to her when she's got it, so she doesn't flip it (or herself). If you want a very solid, nice-looking drum that sounds very mild and quiet, this would be a good choice for you. I was expecting something that sounded a bit more like a musical instrument.
Customer Review: Fun Drum - and 'Green' Too! Summary: 5 Stars
I was looking for rhythm instruments for my nephews - ages 2 and 4.
This drum was exactly what I was looking for. The sound is not too hard on Mom and Dad's ears, which is always a part of toy decision criteria. I loved that the company that makes it is 'Green' - there are many environmental bonuses of buying toys from this company. The most critical to me as an Aunt was that the materials that this item were made from were eco-friendly and non-toxic to the kiddos (as they tend to put everything in their mouth etc). It was a well received gift and the kids play with it often!
Customer Review: Would be fantastic, if modified Summary: 1 Stars
When you look at the design, you will see the center is more "cut out" than the rest. While this is necessary to allow for different sounds, this center piece of wood needs to be thicker. My 2 yr old Grandson broke that piece after playing with it for about an hour or so. {It was broken by being hit with the drumstick} The toy had to be thrown out. there was no repairing it as the break was sharp and dangerous.
While it does help the child create many different sound & again, all that is needed is to make that one piece of wood thicker. It is a good toy for musical education otherwise. But the "Otherwise" is a biggie! I'll be writing to the manufacturer about this as well.
Customer Review: Instantly a favorite for my 1-year-old nephew! Summary: 5 Stars
I was first exposed to this drum at a toy store, where the store manager demonstrated the various sounds that this little toy makes. Soon, I was actively reading reviews and decided to take a chance - which turned out to be a huge hit (no pun intended)! My nephew grabbed the drumstick and began playing for just about the whole weekend. The great part about this drum is the different sounds it makes - so it's both enjoyable for him and us! He really enjoys this drum and it was sturdy enough to handle this future percussionist's forceful tapping. I don't normally write reviews but was so pleased with this purchase that I had to share.
Customer Review: The good and the ugly Summary: 3 Stars
This drum has a great sound, is cute and is more or less well constructed. I was disappointed, however, to see that the joints in the wood on the side of the drum were splitting apart when I took it out of the box. It was as if the drum was constructed with wet wood that shrunk after the drum was assembled, leaving 1-2mm gaps. The gaps in the wood are purely cosmetic though, because the sound is fine and the drum seems to be strong. The rubber tipped mallet optimizes the tone of the drum. My toddler really enjoys playing with it. She was really excited to hear the three different tones that she could produce on the same drum.
