Update- I wrote this review about the success of this present for Amanda's 7th birthday. She is 11 now, and we are still playing! (unfortunately she still usually wins!):I bought this game for my nieces' 7th birthday. Initially it was a little hard to get started. After her 15- year old cousin taught us some strategy tricks, the games heated up! We have brought this game on every vacation since. She is now 11 and still enjoys playing as do I. This version is very nice with a folding board. (However-the wood did warp one year when we took the game to a cottage on the beach, and no longer neatly folds for travel, but it is easily packed by putting the stones in a small pouch.) This model has very pretty glass stones which enhances the experience. This is an inexpensive investment for hours of fun. I believe my niece learned a great deal about math, logic and strategy by playing- I highly recommend it as a family game. I initially hesitated as to whether it was suitable for a 7 year old, but after learning the basic strategies she could easily hold her own against myself or any other adult. My father is still unable to win against her!
Description of Deluxe Wood Mancala
The word mancala means "to transfer" in Arabic, and different versions of this deceptively simple strategy game are played all around the world. Each of the 12 pits contains 4 "seeds" or stones. The player chooses one pit from which to "sow" the seeds. All the stones from that pit are placed one by one into the successive pits, counterclockwise around the board. The game ends when all of the pits on one side of the board are empty; the winner is the player with the most stones.
