Toys and Games Reviews of Star Wars Risk Original Trilogy EditionCustomer Review: A neat reinvention of Risk Summary: 4 Stars
I played Risk a lot as a teenager. My nephew brought this game on a family vacation and we played it every day (3-player version primarily). It took a while to learn and apply all of the very complicated additional rules and also figure out appropriate strategies. Because it was a lot to keep up with, it seems like players are more likely to make critical mistakes (like not playing a card that would help an attack or forgetting to move the Death Star before their turn is over). In the end, we found the Hutts winning most frequently (sometimes on their second turn). In general I think the Empire can win more easily than the Rebels.
Getting cards and using them for ships or actions can completely change the course of a game, adding another randomizing factor in addition to the dice. The cards can be really funny, featuring quotes from the movies like "Clumsy as he is stupid". You will want to get a ship each turn, but don't use the best cards which can mean life or death during an attack. Occasionally turning in a matched set of cards is enough to push someone into a win, so the cards serve three different purposes (and the match doesn't increase like it did in the original game).
It was fun learning the new rules and trying out the different factions and their objectives. The rebels seem at the biggest disadvantage since their objective (destroying the base where the emperor is located) isn't even possible until that base is in play (may not happen for the whole game) and the Empire can easily defend the base by parking the Death Star there. I wish the pieces were better quality. The cardboard tokens for ships should have been plastic and the bases should have been metal because once the cardboard is worn, everyone can realize which cardboard piece is the emperor (we then switched to quarters for bases). It seems like our games usually didn't last as long as in the original edition, but primarily because the Hutts can win early or the Rebels might luck up and find the emperor early. If we had more experience, the games would probably last longer.
I wouldn't pay the big price Amazon has listed, but if you can pick this game up for a more reasonable price, this is a fun game.
