Toys and Games Reviews of Risk: Lord of the Rings EditionCustomer Review: Like it or love it! Summary: 5 Stars
This was a birthday gift for our 9-year old son, an avid Tolkein (books) and LOTR (movies) fan. He loved the gameboard, with its depiction of Middle Earth, and thouroughly enjoys playing the special game rules. Not wanting to learn special rules (okay, I'm showing my age), we were still able to play a traditional game of RISK using the special gameboard.
His younger brothers have also taken to the game, and it was wonderful to see them working through the basic arithmetic necessary to calculate armies.
If you are a RISK fan who enjoyed LOTR, you'll like this game.
If you are a LOTR fan who enjoyed RISK, you'll like this game.
If you're a RISK fanatic and a LOTR fanatic, you'll LOVE this game.
Update (May 2009): My boys are older now and they've had a number of different themed game sets. This one ties with LOTR Monopoly as an all-time favorite.
Customer Review: Awesome Game, but buy this on ebay, not Amazon! Summary: 5 Stars
This is the best version of risk I have ever played!Hasbro took the time and got this one right! This version of Risk has Strong Holds, Leaders, Chance occurences and a beautful map and pieces! I won't duplicate the many reviews that describe all the changes, but trust me, this version of Risk is much more sophisticated and allows for an incredible amount of strategy. However, this year the game was expanded to include territories covered in the "Return of the King!" You must buy the TRILOGY version, otherwise you're getting last year's game. Amazon apparently is OUT of the Trilogy version!! Hasbro must have had overstock from last year, because as the Trilogy Editions are selling out, they are selling the old version. It's unfortunate that they thought no one would care! To end a good note, the Trilogy version is the best Risk of all time! Buy it soon!
Customer Review: Lord of the Rings - HO 1/72 Scale Summary: 5 Stars
Hello. This is a great game. After I opened the box I went to my collection of HO 1/72 Scale(inch tall) medieval army men and got one of them. It turns out the figurines for this game are on scale with my collection. Now I can take the elven archers, eagles, orcs, cave trolls and others and make war on the Normans, Romans or others. One box comes with 4 groups....Two evil(Red and Black) and two good(green and yellow). Each group contains either 40 elven archers, 6 eagles and 12 riders of Rohan or 40 orcs, 6 cave trolls and 12 dark riders. This means that if you buy two boxes of this game you can have an impressive mythical army to contest the historical battlefield of medieval history. Any miniature enthusiast will love this game. I do plan I learning how to play this game for real with my third box, which I will not add the miniatures to my growing army....Yet.
Customer Review: Trilogy Edition Summary: 4 Stars
I found this version of Risk to be much more enjoyable than the original version. I have never been much of a Risk fan, mostly because of the degree of strategy that is involved, but mostly because of the emmense amount of time that is required to play (sometimes taking days for my brother and I to finish a game). The LOTR has added a twist to this classic game, though, by adding in the "one ring". This makes game play shorter, since the game can end when the ring reaches Mt. Doom, or if an evil player "finds" the one ring (optional rule). However, the new game rules are optional. Purists to Risks and fans of LOTR can still play until one player conquers Middle Earth. As I said, I'm not much of a Risk fan, but I definitely enjoy this version of the game much more. My wife and I play once a week! And we'll have friends or family over to play as well.
Customer Review: Mr. Fordo Summary: 5 Stars
Lord of the Rings was made for Risk! You can either use the new Lord of the Rings rules or standard Risk rules. This game follows up to the end of the Two Towers, since the game map does not include Gondor or Mordor, which will be in the third movie installment. By looking at this game board, I'm sure that there will be some "expansion pack" which will include Gondor and Mordor that can be attached to this current board. Most die hard Risk enthusiasts might not enjoy the rule changes, but that's just human nature. Give the new rules a try and it'll be a new twist to Risk. I'm a big Risk fan and also a big LOTR fan and this is the prefect board game for those that love LOTR. If you already have Risk, then try to tricksey a friend into getting this as I doubt you'd want two versions of a similar board game.
