Toys and Games Reviews of Risk: Lord of the Rings EditionCustomer Review: LOTR Risk Review Summary: 5 Stars
If you are a fan of Lord of the Rings then I would highly recommend this board game. It offers a very exciting way of playing RISK in the LOTR world. It has special rules, and game modes that are taylored to LOTR which makes it highly addictive and extremely enjoyable for 2, 3 or 4 players. 2 player game are not out of the question and at times can be the most enjoyable. The level of strategy and thought that goes into planning every attack and card play is very enjoyable. The more you play, the more you realize things that you could have done differently to turn the tide of the war of the ring! I have never played the classic version of RISK and after playing this Lord of the Rings version regularly throughout the summer I have no desire to even attempt regular RISK.
Again, highly recommended for huge LOTR fans and all fans alike. An Epic Game that involves, patience, tactics and strategy in Middle Earth. It is an experience that will bring you very close to the realism captured in the movies. One Ring to Rule them all, One Board Game to Rule them All.
Customer Review: Better than the original! Summary: 5 Stars
Well-designed game. It has many of the elements I loved about the original Risk game, battle strategy, treaties (and betrayal), a nice dose of randomization to prevent absolute domination.I like that there is a definite winner without the need to completely conquer the world (though that would certainly help). The point system lets the game end (even before the Ring gets to Mt Doom) and have a definite winner. I like the addition of mountains and rivers to restrict movement between territories. I love the event and quest cards, throwing surprises into the game. Anyone who has played the original game much has eventually run into the situation where two opponents have an impossible army buildup along every front and likely ends up rolling once to see whose entire territory falls. Not so in this game. Trading cards for armies has been addressed (no more adding 80 armies for a trade in). The general flow of the game has a lot more give and take accross the board. I would recommend this game for any strategy game lover, even if they aren't Tolkien fans.
Customer Review: Great Version of a Classic Game Summary: 4 Stars
I grew up playing the original Risk game with my father, brother, and cousins. It has been a sort of institution in my family for years. That being said I might like this game version more. Maybe because I did play the original version so much or maybe it is because I fell in love with Middle Earth after seeing the movies but to me the addition of mountains, rivers, leaders, and strongholds changed the whole dynamic of the game and made it seem less chance based and even more strategy oriented. Troop movements and army formations must now take into account bridges and passes. Attacks must factor in leaders and strongholds.
If I had anything negative to say it would be that some of the color contrasts make it hard to tell what "continent" a province belongs to and I must agree with another reviewer that cheap marketing tactics have created two versions [FOTR/Towers and Trilogy] so definitely get the trilogy version if you are a LOTR fan or else just get the cheaper version.
Customer Review: Wonderful! Summary: 5 Stars
Lord of the Rings Risk is a great game. I didn't even know there was a trilogy edition and recieved the other one for Christmas, but it doesn't matter. The pieces are finely depicted as creatures and characters from the LOTR trilogy (Elven archers, Rohirrim, and Eagles for the Good side, Orcs, Nazgul, and Cave Trolls for the Evil side) and the board displays a decent portion of Middle Earth. I never played non-LOTR Risk, but the rulebook shows a variety of changes including the advancement of the Fellowship (represented by the One Ring) on the board. The game ends when the leave Middle Earth (not technically at then end of their quest since Mordor isn't included on the non-Trilogy version). It makes the game a lot shorter! Really, I just like the thought of taking over Middle Earth! It has all kinds of places to take over, from the Grey Havens to Mirkwood to Edoras! If your a Lord of the Rings fan who likes a good strategy game, you'll probably love Lord of the Rings Risk!
Customer Review: Good ideas, but bad implementation by manufacturer Summary: 3 Stars
My wife & I have been playing Risk for nearly 20 years, and have seen many different editions. We like the new strategy options offered in this version by way of the second deck of cards and the "leader" game piece that each person has (which adds +1 to the roll of the die). Also, the territories have "strongholds" which add +1 to defense rolls. Pretty neat. However, there are two things we don't like. First, the map is WAY too busy to be functional. Middle-Earth names are NOT short, and when you cram 5-10 game pieces on top of a small territory, no one knows what it is. Then, when you try to uncover it to see if it matches the card in your hand, everyone knows what you're looking for. Also, we think simpler game pieces (not orcs, eagles, elves, etc.) would be easier to identify and use, though they don't add to the whole "middle earth" theme. Final note: BEST played by 4 players, not 2 or 3. Can't play with more than 4.
