Toys and Games Reviews of Young at ArtCustomer Review: Three Years Play and Still a Family Favorite Summary: 5 Stars
My eldest child received this for Christmas 3 years ago (2006), and it has been one of the most-loved, most-played-with toys in our home.
I don't disagree with other reviewer's gripes about the ladybug. Because our drawing board is older, we had the noisy, difficult-to-maneuver erase function, and actually put up with it for almost a year, erasing it ourselves, until my daughter got into a tantrum-prone do-it-myself phase when she was almost two. My husband took it apart, fixed it in no time, and voila! my daughter could move the ladybug up and down erasing her drawings by herself, with no effort at all.
Our board, in its three years, has held up to all kinds of abuse. It's been stepped on, peed on (gross I know, but my second daughter made a joyous diaper-free run around the house, and the board must have looked like a good place to make a pit stop), drinks spilled on it, it's been used like a sled, thrown, kicked, you name it. Recently it acquired its first blemish when someone tried to gouge it with the pen, but it still holds the drawings like new. Which amazes me.
This board has a couple distinct advantages over the MagnaDoodle. The first is the cushy bean-bag-like pillow attached to the underside. It helps keep it stabilized when they're drawing on it, and moreover adds to the comfort of using this as a lap toy on trips. The second is that, in the case of our board compared to the MagnaDoodle at grandma's house, it's just been more durable, and has seen far more use. The magnet in the pen seems a bit more secure too. And I think it's prettier, but that's just a matter of taste, I suppose.
My kids have done some of their best drawing on this board - both of them love it and still occasionally fight over it. It still goes on longer car trips and to the doctor's office, and it commands their attention even more so than some of their newer toys.
If the new ones have problems with the magnet-dust or whatever is inside them, I'd be tempted to try this in the store before buying it. But clearly, taking our experience into account, there are good durable boards out there. It's a shame they aren't all like that, because this is a really fantastic, loved, fun toy.
