I eyed these in the store for months and kept deciding not to buy them because the price tag made me cringe. We got them as a gift for my son when he was 18 months. He is now 26 months and has not lost interest in them since we got them!
When he is home, truly 80% of his play time is with his bristle blocks (which we call bricks, to make it easier for him to distinguish between these and his wooden blocks). We have 2 sets of them now because he loves them so much. Right at the start, he began making things with them. He stuck two long bricks together crossing one another at one end, and made an airplane! The same two pieces turned perpendicular with one end stuck in the middle of the other's side became a sailboat.
We already had had a similar product (Clip-Os) which were far more expensive and far more aggravating. The bristle blocks here are far more forgiving for little hands that have trouble pushing pieces together and aligning the nubs/bristles evenly. They also fit well in their container, unlike his Clip-Os, which have to be arranged like some kind of logic puzzle in order to fit into their container. Alternatively, I have had no trouble fitting this set PLUS our second set into the green bin that comes with the bristle blocks.
These bristle blocks are great for skillbuilding: fine motor coordination is involved in putting the pieces together; gross motor coordination is involved in the pretend play aspect (e.g. sailing the boat around the table, flying the plane around the room); color names and sorting; shape sorting; logical consequences (i.e. when I smash this on the ground, it breaks apart!); and many other creative learning efforts can come about by playing with these with your child or allowing him/her to play with them independently.
If you had limited funds for buying toys and could only afford to purchase one moderately expensive toy, I would highly recommend getting these. We've gotten more value for dollar on these bristle blocks than anything else we've bought for our son to date.
