Toys and Games Reviews of Hover Disc - AlienCustomer Review: Lots of fun... Summary: 5 Stars
These things are awesome! We never used ours with helium, especially after seeing how well they fly outside with just blowing it up (included is a straw that makes it pretty easy to inflate). We only used them outside.
Even small children can get it pretty high up and they have a blast with these things.
It's a great outdoor toy for picnics, the beach or whatever.
We bought ours at TRU and AC Moore (chain craft store). They are made of mylar so they are pretty tough but you need to watch out for any sharp type objects around it. Even if it does get a hole you can patch it with clear packaging tape.
With younger children, you need to watch that they don't sit or step on them hard.
With older kids (and adults) the thing that seems to get beat up the fastest is the mylar around the rim so on our second disc we ran a piece of clear packaging tape along the edge. The tape does add weight to the disc so it doesn't fly as high so the next disc we will try it with helium.
Customer Review: "High Strength Material"? Uh, Try Again... Summary: 5 Stars
While it's obvious my three kids haven't followed in dear old Dad's footsteps when it comes to taking care of their toys, i.e., anal, bordering on fanatical, I still found it hard to believe that the Space Invasion Hover Disc's lifespan at Casa Paull, from leaving the packaging to entering the trash, was merely a few hours. Don't get me wrong - in the proper hands and in the proper setting, there are a lot worse ways to spend an hour or two. The disc is like an oversized, inflatable, lighter-than-air Frisbee which, if launched properly, is capable of some pretty impressive hangtime. Unfortunately, its fusilage is little more than light-gauge aluminum foil, i.e., Mylar, and prone to ripping upon contact with tree branches. Once that happens, it's time to take the kids inside and dry their tears, crack open a brew, and chalk it up to experience because there's no way mend this thing once it get a hole in it. Believe me, I tried. Your results may vary...
Customer Review: Very Short-Lived Fun! Summary: 4 Stars
I saw this in a store and bought it for my son's birthday. Invited 2 neighbor boys over for cake and afterwards opened the presents - this one was the one they all wanted to play with. Didn't have helium so blew it up using the enclosed straw- so far so good. I thought they'd toss it around the living room (gently, but what do I know) , but they ran outside with it. 5 fun-filled soaring tosses and 3 minutes later it was torn from edge to edge and that was the end of that. Just looked at their web site - says you can tape it together and should be OK, but previous reviewer seems to have had a poor resolution with that. If this was made with a little (or a lot) more durability, this would be a great fun toy. If you have kids who will toss it around gently, it IS fun!
Customer Review: Hover Disc is one-time-use...ours flew away! Summary: 1 Stars
I bought the hover disc for my 3 1/2 year old son. I read the packaging thoroughly and it indicated that if you would like it to "hover" you should fill it with helium rather than air (and don't use it in windy conditions). Well, we went to the store, filled it with helium, took it to the park (it was not at all windy) and my son threw it in the air and it hovered...and hovered...and hovered...all the way across the river!!! Needless to say my son was extremely upset and for that matter so was I!! I wrote the company but have not heard back from them. The manufacturer needs to warn consumers not to fill with helium for outside use! (Even the description on Amazon.com doesn't warn us!)
Customer Review: Hover Disks Are Fun Summary: 5 Stars
It's more like addictive. Just fill it up with air and you're set. Since it's like a giant balloon but with more flexibility you can play with it indoors or outside. I wouldn't recommend helium b/c it would fly away, plus regular air works fine. My family has used it inside our home, parking lots, parks, and at the beach. It didn't break but do not use it in windy areas, even though we did have fun chasing after it, it could have flown away. Also use common sense, don't play with it where there's sharp objects obviously that's how it's gonna tear and break.
