Toys and Games Reviews of 3-Foot Hover Disc - Vertigo

Customer Review: Loads of fun but not that durable
Summary: 4 Stars

We bought this "UFO" disc on a whim, brought it home and just blew air into the straw (you don't need helium). What a surprise that it could fly so high (I'd say at least 50 ft) with just a simple throw! We laughed and laughed. The hover disc is much more fun when there is a bit of a wind, because it darts all around. When there is no wind it just sort of goes up and down again. We didn't try to do any tricks with it. We have lots of trees in our yard so it got caught often, but sometimes it would "hover" right back out of the tree, or off the roof again. It was more fun than a kite because you didn't have to struggle to get it up. We must have played with it for a few hours on different days before I (stupidly) used a pole to get it out of a tree and punctured it. (Next time I'll try throwing tennis balls as another reviewer suggested.) I taped it up but it managed to leak again and was basically ruined. So we got another one. I'd like to try it in a huge field. You do have to watch out for power lines because it goes much higher and farther than you'd think it would. I think it's great for kids because you can learn about aerodynamics by thinking about why it swoops around the way it does and trying to predict what it will do next. But be warned, it probably won't last a long time.

Customer Review: Great toy to take to a park
Summary: 4 Stars

No doubt about it, it's a big mylar balloon with a ring inside it to keep the shape. But the aerodynamics are great to experiment with. If you decide to buy this toy, please follow the instructions carefully. When properly inflated and used in an open setting, it will work beautifully and should last for white a while. I got the disc for my daughter in January 2003 and it's never had a hole or a leak. We only filled it with air, not helium. The packaging recommends helium only for indoor use, such as in a gymnasuim or another open area. (The tv commercials are a bit misleading when they show it being used in a home.) When filled with air, we take it to a park (a soccer field or baseball diamond) on a non-windy day and toss it around. We have a great time playing with it and running around with it. After almost a year it hasn't lost much air - we've never had to add more air - and has never had a hole. Bottom line: save the helium for indoor use only, use it only in wide open spaces (away from trees and powerlines), and follow the instructions in the package. I'm buying a few for Christmas gifts this year.

Customer Review: Well worth the money!
Summary: 5 Stars

My kids, myself, and my grandkids have all loved this silly toy. Although I'll admit it is not as durable as I would like for it to be, even if it does get caught by a high wind and float away or get stuck in a tree for the 10th time and get punctured, the fun and excersize it provides everyone is worth every penny. The first one we had lasted about a week. The second one blew away because it was a bit too windy. I just bought two more and everyone agrees they are a lot more fun with helium. My family ages 4 to 50 has gotten a lot of fun out of these. I'm just sorry I can't buy it at the store anymore and can only purchase them online. When these go bad, I'll get a couple more because EVERYONE I know loves them from ages 3 to 63... and I love seeing families playing together outside instead of in front of video games, the TV or stuck on cell phones! I also strongly agree with the man who said he could easily drop $100.00 at Chuck E. Cheese and not have nearly as much fun in an hour or two!

Customer Review: okay, but don't pay a lot
Summary: 2 Stars

My daughter haaaad to have this toy, bugged us for daaaays, so I finally ordered it an think I paid about $12 plus shipping. first I put air in it, and it did nothing cool like you see on the commercial. so we took it to the store and had them put helium in it. That's the only thing that makes this toy fun, and she does like it. But I was just picking up the house (the things lying in my living room, where ya gonna store a 3 ft inflated Mylar disc?)and noticed the edges of the toy are all worn and the ring in poking out in several places. The thing is no different from the Mylar balloons you get at the grocery store, it's just bigger and flatter, and has a ring in it. We've had it about 2 weeks, maybe she's played with it 4 times. Bottom line, the toys not worth 12 bucks (plus shipping!). If they were selling these at wal-mart for 5 buck maybe it'd be alright. But they need to make the thing more durable if they want to sell them on the net, otherwise they will keep getting "junk" reviews.

Customer Review: Don't waste your time

My daughter begged for this toy for weeks after seeing it on tv and by chance we found one in Learning Express. We couldn't wait to get home and inflate it. We didn't have helium, so we blew into it with the straw. It was just ok when we took it outside, but she didn't like it cause it didn't look like the one on tv. So of course the next day I filled it with helium to make it fly like the tv...Big mistake, I over inflated it too. The plastic circle inside bent and wouldn't straighten even after we deflated it some. Then voila, my son poked it with his remote control car antenna and put a hole in it. I duck taped the hole to keep it goin longer, but then the circle inside broke in half and we couldn't use it at all any more. This toy is not durable in the least, just picture a regular old helium balloon with a plastic cirle inside. I thought it was junk and wish we got something else instead. Save your money
