My daughter got two of these as gifts back in December and we're just now getting around to using one. I thought you put the shirt in, squirted in the dye, twisted it around and let it dry, just like the instructions said. OK, I wasn't surprised to find there was a little more to it, but this has been unreal. First you have to soak the shirt in the fixer solution. To start, drop the fixer tablets into water and let them dissolve. This takes 1-2 hours. Soak the shirt for at least an hour. The instructions said 24 hours was best, so we let it sit overnight and got on to the rest of the to-do list for the day. Then it has to air dry. If you live in New Mexico or Arizona or some desert place, this might not take long but it took our shirt most of the day. In the meantime, my daughter mixed up the dyes. These tablets also take 1-2 hours to dissolve. We started Monday. Wednesday morning she put her shirt into the tube. It was a child's medium (8-10) and pretty much filled up the tube, an adult size shirt (or a child's large) is not going to fit. She squirted the dyes and twisted the shirt. Now it has to sit overnight. Since she did it after breakfast, we let it sit until after dinner. Then you rinse it and let it air dry again. I figure the shirt she started Monday should be ready to wear Thursday. OK. The finished product didn't look too bad. I thought it had a lot of white for tie-dye, but my daughter was happy. You don't have a lot of control over where the die goes and it did end up with a few brown spots, like another reviewer mentioned. It was fun, but I don't see how it's any less hassle than tradition tie-dye.
The instructions also say to handwash or machine wash cold separately and air dry. I hope that's referring to the first washing and not all of them. I've never done traditional tie-dye, but I'm pretty sure it's not a four-day process. You can speed it up by only soaking the shirt (or whatever you are dying) for an hour, but you're still looking at 2-3 hours plus drying time before you can even start with the dyes.
