Toys and Games Reviews of Monkey Business Sports SpiderwhackCustomer Review: Fun Toy - Even for the Cats! Summary: 4 Stars
Santa brought this for one of my kids - and we had a lot of fun playing with it. The little spider balls are funny to look at - and because the paddles have a lot of give with the rubber, it's a lot harder to play than it looks. From my 17 year old son, to my 9 year old daughter, they had a great time with it. I even got in on the fun - I thought I could do better than they were...and was quickly proved wrong! The rubbery center makes this challenging - and I would think frustrating for smaller kids.
The only issue? We have 3 cats and the rubbery backing and slight stickiness of the spider ball legs do not mix well! It didn't take long for the spider balls and the rubbery part of the paddles to become fully engulfed in cat hair - which instantly decreased the fun of the game. You can rinse the hair/dust/dirt off and keep playing - but there comes a point when it just doesn't come clean anymore. Then again, this isn't the most expensive toy ever.
This was a ton of fun and entertained the entire family for hours. I put it away after Christmas, and when the kids found it a couple of weeks later, they brought it out to play with it again. Even their friends got in on it. I would give it a 5 for fun - and a 3 for durability, since the spider balls fall on the floor (a lot!) and get dirty quickly. However, once the kids got tired of it (mostly because they had to wash it off all the time), the cats "stole" the spider balls - and now, over 2 months later, they're still playing with them. I find the spider balls all over the place - and the cats love it when I rinse the balls off (let them air dry!) and then throw them on the linoleum floor. The stickiness and floppiness of the rubber legs drives the cats nuts! (The kids also have fun using the paddles as slingshots, flinging the spider balls into the air for either other kids to catch, or for the cats to chase. Crazy cats...crazy kids!)
NOTE: I would not get this toy if very small kids are around. The spider balls are fun to look at - and they would definitely put them in their mouth, making it a choking hazard. Also, if you let your cats play with these spider balls, check the balls frequently for tears in the legs. Depending on how rough your cat is with toys, you don't want them pulling off one of the rubbery legs and eating it. Yuck!
