Toys and Games Reviews of Qwirkle Board GameCustomer Review: Excellent fun for the whole family Summary: 4 Stars
We love this game! We've been playing with our 3 kids for a few years (ages 11,9,7), and always introduce it to our gatherings of college students when they come over (we host game nights most Fridays, and Qwirkle is always out and being played a number of times). It takes about 30 minutes for a game, and we've been able to "customize" the rules for more players. This is one of 2 games that I always have to TRY to win at against my son (11), so it actually is challenging and satisfying even with kids (or a group of college kids!). If you're looking for a 6 hour brain-burner, try Twilight Imperium 3 (I love this one too!). If you're looking for an hour between turns, try Risk or Axis & Allies. BUT if you're looking for a quick, fun, immediately accessible, all-aged, interactive game with many levels of play with replay-ability, Qwirkle is the game for you.
Customer Review: A great game for adults too! Summary: 5 Stars
My husband and I got rid of our TV recently since I'm in grad school and he works on other projects. We have a very peaceful living room and lots of books, but we wanted an interactive game that we would both like. This game is perfect. The instructions are well illustrated and we find that it's just as fun not keeping track of the points. We've played this game together several times, it's also great for teenages and it's intellectually stimulating. The product is well designed, and sturdy. Basically, you build rows of colors or shapes (without repeats). The difficulty of the game depends on the players since you can choose to "branch out" a lot or a little. The larger the branching, the easier it is to add more tiles. I rarely ever enjoy games this much and I would recommend it for all ages. This is a great game for adults and teens!
Customer Review: Very Versatile Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this game on sale during the holidays based on the good reviews. It didn't look all that fun by the picture but I thought it would be a good family game. Surprisingly, it is easy enough for an 8 year old child to play but if you wanted to get hard core as adults there can be a lot of strategy involved. Usually playing game with the little kids is a bit of a chore, but we can get out Quirkle and everyone enjoys it. I don't know what the comments are about regarding tile quality. The tiles are black wood with the shapes painted on and they seem like good quality durable tiles that should last. In fact, there is something sort of neat about them being wood as opposed to plastic, just the feel of them is more pleasing. Usually this game gets played with just 2 players at our house and it is just as fun with 2 as with more.
Customer Review: Scrabble with Shapes! Summary: 5 Stars
My family and I have a lot of fun playing this game. It is like Scrabble with shapes and colors. The rules are fairly easy to follow and teach new-comers. The pieces are great - I really like games like these (no cheap parts). The pieces are all solid wood! The paint seems pretty durable. The game also comes with a nice canvas pouch to store and pull the pieces from. It makes it a lot easier to travel and store (we just got rid of the box and store the paper rules inside the pouch). My family has it, I have it, and I've purchased it for other friends and family that have also enjoyed it. For two years in a row it has been a lightning round deal around the holidays, so if you're looking for it as a Christmas gift look for it there at a better price!
Customer Review: Simple to Learn, Crazy Complex to Master Summary: 5 Stars
This game is incredibly simple to learn. But the dynamics of play make it a game with awesome replay value. Every time my group plays this game we find new and interesting levels of strategy. The concepts of blocking moves, counting tiles, gambits, timing, etc are all things that develop over time.
The set we purchased was well made. A few of the blocks did have chips, but that was easily fixed with the touch of a black marker. We also found the gloss finish of the blocks to be a bit distracting, but a light coat of Testers Matte finish spray paint did the trick. The only ongoing problem we've had is the color proximity of the orange and red blocks is difficult to see under dim lighting.
This is a great game!
