Toys and Games Reviews of Classic Parcheesi Board GameCustomer Review: Great treatment of a classic game Summary: 5 Stars
DESIGN: Some sources say that the game behind what we know as Parcheesi may be as old as 1500 years. And yet, despite the fact that my family were big board game players, we never owned or played Parcheesi when I was growing up. Given that my mom and dad were both of an artistic bent, I half suspect that the reason we never owned the game was that the board design that was popular back in my day isn't exactly what I'd call "fetching". It looks very two dimensional and uninspired to my eye, and I can just seem my folks looking at the box, shaking their heads and putting it back on the shelf. They always preferred games that mixed great design with great game play, and while this game is a classic family strategy game in terms of the play itself, the old design seems totally uninspired.
Then, a couple of years ago, while I was looking for games to play with my wife's daughter, I saw the re-design of Parcheesi and knew I just had to have it. The game's roots are reportedly from India, and this treatment of the game takes its design inspiration from those Indian roots. The pawn are highly stylized sculpts of a Tiger, Elephant, Buffalo and Camel, and are wonderful little bits of art all to themselves. The board features what look to my eye to be Indian inspired designs of each animal, along with lots of atmospheric flourishes that really give the game a wonderfully exotic, yet still simple look. It's one of those games I always look forward to playing, in part, just because it looks so nice while we're playing it.
The game as presented by Milton-Bradley/Hasbro features two wooden dice, but in keeping with the fun of the colorful plastic pawns, we added 8 large transparent plastic dice of our own (red for the tigers, yellow for the camels, blue for the elephants and green for the buffalos). It adds to the color of the game, which we love.
GAMEPLAY: Parcheesi is one of those games that's got just the right mix of simplicity, complexity, luck and strategy to make it a quick family favorite. The instructions that come with the came are thorough and complete, and even our young daughter found the rules easy to follow. I wish they included more background on the history of the game, but that's a minor point.
If, like me, this ancient game is all new to you, let me give you a short overview of the rules. The basic idea behind the game is a simple path race, with complexities added in related to how you use the dice and a few special features on the board. Clever use of your rolls and wise use of the board's blocking and safety features can turn what seems like a simple "foot race" into quite a battle of wits, especially when playing with four people. Or, if you have little ones you'd like to play with, you can simply opt-out of some of the more competative aspects of the game, and just sit back and enjoy a simple dash for the finish with fun looking figures on a colorful board.
If you take your Parcheesi seriously, and want to get into all the various strategies, this version will give you a very enjoyable artifact to play with while your figuring out all the nuances of the rules.
I hope that MB does one of their "special edition" versions of this treatment at some point, with a larger board and even fancier Indian inspired designs. I think it would become an instant hit. My hat's off to the design team on this one ... excellent work!
