Our whole family LOVES this doll! (received 18 days post-order,in Canada).As huge fans of the Skippyjohn Jones books, I knew my 7-year old would love the doll, and planned to have him peek out of his Christmas stocking. Then, our son had to have surgery. Our son packed the essentials-the 2 Skippyjohn books and this doll. We listened to the books on CD on the way to surgery and on the way home, and the doll went into the OR with our son, who took every step of this scary time in stride, with El Skippito by his side!
We are extremely happy with the quality of the doll; we would give it 5 stars IF we knew how it will do in the washing machine, and IF it had poseable limbs and ears, since cats express so many emotions through their ear and paw positions. We have great fun enacting our own Skippito sagas with the doll.
While I agree the doll isn't very soft, I think perhaps a softer Skippyjohn might not be in character- he might lose some of his "Fearless One" personality if he flopped all over.
The doll is VERY solidly constructed;I do not worry it will get pulled apart. The cape will only come off if a child can undo strong, tiny knots. The mask is sown on solidly, although you can move it up or down to see "Kitty Boy" unmasked. I do not think a child could pull the ears off; stitching is quite solid. Our 5-month old Siamese kitten, Bast (a.k.a.Bastito Bumbleito), has been unable to inflict ANY damage on this doll, although she has tried many times to do away with"competition". As I write this, my son, Bast and Skippyjohn Jones are happily curled up asleep together.
