I continue to be impressed with the overall quality of Melissa and Doug products. The quality is on par with Thomas and friends trains. The quality of construction and level of detail is nearly as good, but at less than half the cost! And best of all, M&D trains, tracks, and accessories are compatible with all Thomas the Train wooden railway products.
I bought this, along with some Thomas trains and accessories, for use with my son's M&D 130 piece wooden train set. These pieces are bigger and slightly more detailed than the trains that came with the original 130 piece set. The set comes with both cargo and passenger trains. There are two issues that are worthy of note: 1. Longer train pieces (4+ axles) are more likely to become derailed when making sharp turns. This is especially problematic when your child wants to connect all the trains he/she has to make the longest train possible. (This has led to some frustration with my 4 year old.) 2. The cargo pieces that come with this set are not compatible with the cargo pieces that came with the 130 piece train set. M&D uses posts to connect the cargo to the bed of the cargo trains. The cargo trains in this set are slightly longer than the pieces that came with the original set. As a result, the distances between the posts are slightly longer, so the cargo is not interchangeable with smaller cargo trains.
Overall, a very good product that I am satisfied with.
