My daughter got this when she was about 22 months old. In the past 2 months it has quickly become one of her best-loved toys. We play with it several times a day every day. She had recently become interested in the ABCs, and having a tactile version to play with has made a world of difference. And now that she's gotten the letters down, she has started pairing up the letters by how alike they are (like X and S which sound similar, and E and F which are similarly shaped); it's fun to see her analyze the letters on deeper levels like that.
Some reviewers have taken issue with the pictures, but we haven't had a problem at all. Yarn? That's easy to explain. Insect? Now she knows an insect is a bug. If every alphabet toy used the same examples for their letters, kids would have a very limited early understanding of phonics. I'm glad they have some unusual choices so she can understand that more things start with the letter I than ice cream.
So far it's held up well to vary enthusiastic play. The cut-out shapes have given her very little problems. Sometimes the letter O can be difficult to put in since it's not a perfect circle, but I'm glad it has posed a challenge for her. Melissa and Doug have rarely disappointed us and this puzzle is yet another hit with our girl. I've started buying it as presents for others. It has contributed so much to her understanding of the alphabet, and I really enjoy playing with it with her.
