Toys and Games Reviews of Melissa & Doug Classic Wooden AbacusCustomer Review: Very Sturdy Summary: 3 Stars
This is a very sturdy toy. My kids are really hard on toys and we've had this for a year. It still looks like it did when we got it.
I wish the wood-colored (I know they are not actually colored, but that's the problem) beads were white, at least - it's kind of frustrating when you want to review colors with a young child. And it would be nice if there were a few more colors, though I am glad they stick with distinctive, primary colors - with the exception of those "wood-colored" beads. :p
Customer Review: great for teaching preschooler addition, multiplication Summary: 5 Stars
It's not a Chinese Abacus, obviously, but it's a great learning toy for pre-schoolers to learn / practice addition and subtraction (single and doulbe digit) and multiplication (up to 10 x 10). My 4 and 5 yr old use it, in conjuction to the Montessori counting beads, and the math they can do is remarkable. Ciphering rocks! The only question I have is what kind of paint and finish is used on the wood (in the context of so many toys that have lead in their paint).
Customer Review: Old school toys are better!! Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this item to assist our autistic child with learning her addition and subtraction ( visual tools are better for her to learn with). This item has been wonderful! She is also teaching her 2 year old sister how to count by using this item. I admitt I use to fall into the trap of purchasing electronic toys as learning tools, but there something about the simple toys that we had when we grew up that just seems better.
Customer Review: Not a real abacus Summary: 3 Stars
Although many reviewers tout this toy as highly educational, I find that beyond working on color recognition, fine motor skills, and simple counting, this toy is very limited because it is not a real abacus. Yes, it has beads on wires that you push back and forth, but it doesn't have the right number of beads grouped together. There should be groups of two beads and five beads in a row--not 10 all together.
Customer Review: I thought Melissa and Doug toys were made in US, not China Summary: 4 Stars
Overall the abacus is wonderful, and my daughter and son seem to enjoy playing with it, but I was disappointed to find that this toy was actually made in China, not America as I thought. I purchased the abacus from Melissa and Doug believing that they are an American company that makes their toys in America. I was disappointed to read the label that stated it was made in China.
