Toys and Games Reviews of Melissa & Doug Classic Wooden AbacusCustomer Review: Not Just Your Ordinary Toy Summary: 5 Stars
I was surprised they still make these. I remember using one when I was in school. It was used for Math. It made addition and subtraction so much easier. I now have grandchildren my granddaughter is in the first grade and just learning addition and subtraction facts. She just loves using it when she practices her Math. We make it a game and she is always ready to play. The repetition helps her to
remember 8+6=14 without always relying on counting on the abacus or her fingers. The beads are big and brightly colored which is teaching her three year old sister simple counting and she is also learning her colors. In my opinion this an excellent learning tool that can be used as a learning toy as well and it comes highly recommended.
Customer Review: Quality Abacus Summary: 4 Stars
I'm not sure why other reviewers have complained about this being dangerous for younger children. I have three kids and bought this to help my daughter with math. My youngest just turned four and I don't see where it poses any danger to her. Children any younger shouldn't have one of these anyway because the purpose is for counting and math, and it's just not necessary to 2 year olds. The metal rods are plenty durable, the wood pieces are screwed together solidly. If a child breaks this, then he's a destructive kid. Yes, beads would be dangerous for babies, but again, it's not meant for babies. I thought this was a great buy, and is much better quality than Walmart junk.
Customer Review: Fun and educational... Summary: 5 Stars
Even before I got all the plastic wrapping off, my little 2 yr. old girl was moving the beads across while counting them...The construction seems satisfactory, but I'm not holding my breath that this one will stand the test of time...Anyhow, it's quite cheap, so I think it's worth it...We've already enjoyed some seriously fun counting and math time with the kids...If you coordinate this with a chalkboard or magnetic numbers(with math signs), your going to be able to give your child a huge head start on math because they'll be able to visualize the concepts...All in all, it's a quality device at a reasonable price to give your kids a boost, even if it's not a true abacus.
Customer Review: Surprisingly durable educational tool! Summary: 5 Stars
If you're looking at abacuses, you probably already know all the uses - patterns, counting, basic mathematical operations (addition, subtraction, and basic multiplication). In the packaging Melissa & Doug provides a longer list of uses as well, which was helpful.
While I use this with my preschooler, my toddler is fascinated by it as well. It is well made, but the most surprising durability has come from my little guy standing and jumping on it when it's laying on its side. He likes the feel of the beads, and his 25 pounds don't even cause it to flex. (I do try to keep him off of it, but life happens. ;))
Customer Review: exactly what we needed Summary: 5 Stars
My daughter immediately fell in love with this and uses it to do her math homework. She had problems remembering numbers 11-20 but knew the rest up to 100.When she got this she counted them perfectly I think having them right in front of her instead of trying to find more fingers/toes helped a lot. She noticed the alternating color patterns and was excited to point it out to me. She did ask why the uncolored beads weren't colored lol but no big deal right. Appears to be stable and sturdy and I know she will take good care of it.
