My daughter saw this years ago at a Toys R Us and asked her Aunt for it for Christmas. The set we have has 10 double sided boards and a cover to the wooden box. Fast forward 4 1/2 yrs my son has discovered this toy and loves it, I decided to get another one to donate to his preschool class. I recently received the new one and there are several differences. The newer one only has 8 double sided boards, no top to the box and the letters just don't feel as well made. The newer set is nice don't get me wrong but I just don't think it will last as long as our first set.Customer Review: Great educational tool for early readers/spellers

I love Melissa and Doug products and this one is no exception. With just a few moments of playtime with this, my son can already identify a handful of letters. He will pick up a letter and say the name of the letter and put it on board. The pictures are bright and eye-catching. I love the natural wood smell. The only issue I would have is the storage - there are lots of pieces and no container with lid to store them in. So I put them all in a ziploc bag which seems to work so far. My son loves to open the ziploc and dump all the pieces on the floor and start spelling!Customer Review: Great puzzle to incoperate spelling

I like Melissa and Doug toys because they are sturdy and appropriate for the age, in this case toddler/pre-school. It's simple, straight-forward logic that kids understand and like to try. My daughter can't read yet (she is 34 months), but she seems to enjoy it. She knows her letters and this particular puzzle has helped her recognize lower case letters. Beware that hte letters are small and my 18 month old likes to put them in her mouth, so I keep the pieces where the younger one can't get at them. I bought this product for my 2 year old daughter that is fascinated by numbers and letters right now. It's a great toy - good quality, good pictures, a lot of letters. The only problem I have with this product is that my daughter has noticed that there is no word in the set that uses the letter "X" and is very concerned about it. I do not know what to tell her and I can't fix the problem. I wish there was a way to buy more puzzle words to accompany the set. I really love Melissa & Doug products!!Customer Review: Warning! I note that several people have gotten this set for their two-year olds. It was on that basis that I decided to order it for our two-year old twin grandchildren. The transparent wrapping containing the set clearly says WARNING! Choking hazard. Not for children under 3 and a half.
This warning should be on Amazon's description of the item. Since it isn't, I seek to warn others that however developmentally advanced their two-year olds may be, this is an inappropriate toy.
