Toys and Games Reviews of Melissa & Doug See & SpellCustomer Review: Splinters Summary: 2 Stars
This toy is built upon a good idea, but executed poorly. I purchased this puzzle and was very excited to use it with my son. However, I realized that the letters were giving him splinters because the wood was peeling off the sides. I returned the toy, quite dissapointed.
Additionally, I feel that the letters are a bit difficult to find because they are all in one small spot. The child will have to organize the letters first before spelling. Or, have the patience to sort through the letters to find the one they are looking for. I believe the montessori sandpaper letters will be of higher quality as well as take care of the secondary issue.
Customer Review: Educational but paint comes off! Summary: 3 Stars
We bought several different Melissa and Doug toys and we love them but on all of them, only after a week of play, the paint is coming off various pieces. On the letters, I can already see white where the red paint used to be on this toy. I'm disappointed, however, I surmise given the lead-paint scare last year that perhaps the company switched paint products and they are just not as durable but safe. I still caution, as your child may end up putting paint chips in their mouth. Or getting it on their hands. I'm going to write to the company to ask about their lack of paint durability; as with three toys and only a week's worth of play I should expect better.
Customer Review: Fun and educational for a LONG time Summary: 5 Stars
I highly recommend this toy. It is very sturdy, educational, and fun. I got this toy for my oldest son when he was three (2 years ago). He loved it, and played with it often together with me. He could read when he had just turned 4 years old, and I credit this toy for much of his progress on reading and writing. My youngest son (two years old) now has started playing with it and really enjoys it. We keep it high up on a shelf and only have it out when an adult is present, so therefor it becomes a special treat to play with it. (and it also helps to keep all the little pieces from disappearing!) I only wish there were capital letters too.
Customer Review: Awesome toy! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this toy to help my 3 year old learn to spell and he loves it. Even though he doesn't know letters yet, he really enjoys matching and I think it's an awesome introduction to letters and spelling. The alphabet has no relevance to children, so I really appreciate this practical approach to introducing letters. Great product, and very sturdy. My only concern is losing the letters!
I do wish the box had a lid.
Another thing worth noting is that they include all letters, not just ones in the words they picked. For example, x and z are included, even though no words with x or z are in the puzzles.
Customer Review: Excellent for autistic kids Summary: 5 Stars
My son is 4 and is autistic. I bought this toy for his older sister, but one day, he started to play with it. He knew all his letters, numbers, shapes and colors. So, this seems to be a logical progression. He has learned to spell the words already. This toy is an excellent teaching tool for autistic kids because of its self correction feature. For example, if he tries to put the wrong letter in one spot, it won't fit in. He likes to play by himself a lot, so this kind of toy is excellent. I wish Mellisa and Doug makes more versions of this type toy, eg. have more sets of boards with different words.
