Toys and Games Reviews of Melissa & Doug See & Spell

Customer Review: Very Educational!
Summary: 5 Stars

My 3 year old LOVES this toy! It comes with sturdy, vividly colored boards with a picture of the object, and shallow depressions of the letters used to spell the word. We lay the letters out in a mixed up circle, and he searches for one letter at a time. The letters fit right down in the depressions. This is great for learning how to sound out letters and spell short words. You can also use the individual letters to make your own words. I guess my only complaints are that there is no enclosed storage for the little letters (we put them in a plastic zip bag so none would get lost), and that some of the letters only have one of each. When you are using the boards, this is not a problem. When you try to make your own words, some times we don't have enough letters. Ah, well. Still a wonderful toy.

Customer Review: Great toy, but wish it had a cover
Summary: 4 Stars

I knew my 3.5 year old would love this since he is very into spelling right now. It's durable and nice that the boards are 2 sided. There are a lot of letters so you can build words other than what's on the boards, but I was disappointed there was only one M. You can't spell Mommy with only 1 M! There were plenty of D's for Daddy. The only real complaint I have is that I wish it had a cover. It's great that the toy has a box and is self contained, but how hard would it have been to put a wood or clear top with it that would slide in to hold the pieces? I ended up putting all the letters in a ziploc, which have to be emptied each time we play with it. Plus, without a lid, you can't store it on it's side. That one improvement would have made it a 5, even without the extra M's.

Customer Review: Puzzle & Spelling & Learning - Oh My!
Summary: 5 Stars

My 5 1/2 year old son started Kindergarten this year, and we purchased this toy to reinforce the learning process at school. First, let me say Melissa & Doug toys can't be beat. They are durable, beatiful, high-quality yet simple works of art disguised at kid's toys. Bravo! Furthermore, no parent can argue that fun doesn't help make the learning process easier. Letter association and recognition are learned from simply starting out searching for puzzle pieces that have the same shape as those missing from the cutouts. When your child is able to complete the puzzle and learn they have also spelled the word of the item pictured, even more positive reinforcement can be found from their pride in accomplishment. Smiles abound for everyone!

Customer Review: good for letters
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this based on reviews because I thought my 4 year old would enjoy it. she does, but doesn't play the same way it was intended. She puts all the boards out and then plays "bingo" and puts the letters in wherever they fit. I have to play with her in order to get her to spell in sequence.

I really wish all these m&d sets had LIDS on the boxes.

Our set only has 8 two-sided tiles, I feel mislead to be honest. It's probably not a huge deal, but it is to me. I didn't even realize it until I noticed the card-thickness piece of foam at the bottom of the box.

Overall though, it has play value and it and the box are very durable and the pictures on the cards are vibrant and colorful.

Customer Review: A beautiful low-tech learning toy
Summary: 5 Stars

This is one of the best toys I have ever gotten for my kids! (They are 5,3 and 2). My 5-year-old is developmentally delayed and this toy has really helped her learn her lower case letters. My 3-year-old now recognizes these words in books--they are all very commonly used words in children's books--and is beginning to read. My 2-year-old is also very enthusiastic about this game and rapidly learning her letters. They have had this toy for months and it is still one of the favorites. Most of the high-tech gadgets they got for x-mas they have completely forgotten about.

Another favorite for my 2-year-old by the same company is beginner pattern blocks.
