I ordered this for my one year old thinking a wooden toy would be "cuter" than the standard plastic stacking rings. The size of this is considerable smaller than any others I'd seen. My son puts everything in his mouth so the stacked center had to be shelved immediately. I didn't want him to impale himself on the slim dowel! He liked to crawl around with the little rings, they were a good size for chubby little hands...but then the paint started chipping off the rings. Our daughter has this stacker and she likes to play with it. She has used the base as a hammer of sorts as well, so for a while we just stacked the colored rings without using the base.
The drawback to this toy is the paint chips off slightly when the rings are banged about. The paint is described by the Melissa & Doug company as "non-toxic" but it chips so that is something to know.
I like that this stacker is made of wood and is obviously fun for my daughter.

Our daughter really enjoyed the neighbor's Fisher Price price version of the stackers, so we thought wood would be a more durable material in addition to getting more rings. We were surprised that the two smallest rings were SO small, but were quite pleased overall. She loves to clack two stackers together for a while before sliding them onto the base. This provides plenty of entertainment for her as she learns about colors and relative size.Customer Review: best ever

I never write reviews but this is BY FAR the best toy ever! for it being a small toy that is usually just bought as an extra this is my 2 year old sons fav. toy.. and has been for about a year now. We're working on our colors and sizes now and it's great. Totally durable and my son throws this with some feeling behind it on out hard wood, and tile floord and one of the stackers has just now got a split in it.

By the time my son had played with this for a while, the paint began chipping off! There are little chips all over each ring and the top ball. Honestly, he didn't even play with it that much. So now, I'm tossing it out rather than handing it down to my daughter. Such a shame, but I've found that most Melissa and Doug toys (all made in China!) just don't have the durability you would expect for the price.
