Toys and Games Reviews of Melissa & Doug Rainbow Stacker

Customer Review: A great value! A good stacker for toddlers, but probably not a first stacker for babies.
Summary: 5 Stars

After reading some of the negative reviews here about the paint being stuck together on this toy, I decided to look for it in a local store to avoid possible return hassles. Ours is perfectly made, so no worries there. I like this stacker for my 16 month old son for a number of reasons. The post is the same diameter all the way down, so the rings can go on in any order now when he is first learning to stack. But for later, the angle of the rings is pretty gradual, so when he's able to start determining the right order it will be a little bit of a challenge. And classic wood toys are just nice in every way-- versatile, and nice to touch, hear and look at.

I wouldn't buy this for a sitting/crawling baby, and I would definitely not leave it on the floor near a new walker. The post seems too poke-y to be near a child who isn't steady with his body. Even with my son, who's secure on his feet now, it's a table toy. The rings are small and numerous enough that it seems more suited to a more advanced stage-- a child who walks well and has good hand control. Someone said they thought the smallest ring was a choking hazard-- not really. It's about the size of one of those Hostess mini donuts, so unless your kid is extremely motivated, has a very large mouth, and is left unsupervised long enough to perform such feats of anatomical interest, you don't need to worry about choking.

Customer Review: Fun, but small pieces & poor paint job
Summary: 2 Stars

I thought this would be a good, sturdy alternative to the plastic stacking rings. At first it seemed great: fun for stacking, banging together, rolling across the floor, etc. For a while, it was just fine.

We had this toy for less than two months when my daughter, who was about 18 months old at the time, put the smallest ring in her mouth (blue ring) -- it fit all the way inside, so much so that I didn't realize it was in there until she opened her mouth. I took just that one piece away. Then, a couple days later, she put the ball into her mouth (red ball at top of toy). I also noticed that the paint began to pop off several of the pieces, so I had to take the whole toy away.

The pieces may not be large enough to actually go down and get lodged in a windpipe, but geez... who wants to go through the panic of looking over to see an entire piece of a toy completely inside the mouth of your child?? They're rounded, too, so if they ever DID get stuck in there, good luck getting a grip on them to pull them out. It's too bad; generally I think this brand is a good, quality brand, except for this one toy. As for us, we're sticking with the Fisher Price plastic stacker.

Customer Review: Not the quality I was expecting
Summary: 3 Stars

This was my first time purchasing a Melissa and Doug product. I am a fan of wooden toys and have a few Haba, Selecta and Plan Toys items that my 11-month baby loves. However, the quality of this toy was disappointing for me. Firstly, the paint has chipped off the edges of all of the rings; secondly, the smaller two rings fit in her mouth completely which is a bit scary, especially when she starts to walk around with them in there; and lastly, I have had to remove the wood stacking pole out of the toy box as my daughter was prone to falling on it. Now, are these the fault of the toy or the child...? I have since seen a few versions that have a better paint that doesn't chip, larger rings, a stacking pole with springs on it that folds should the child fall on it and one that completely comes apart (i.e. the stick comes out of the base) which also solves the falling on problem. I can't deny however, that this has been a great toy for my daughter to play with and we have found so many uses and games to play with the rings. I just have to check for loose paint chips before she gets hold of them.

Customer Review: good simple fun
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a good basic addition to any toddler's toy collection. We like it because:

- It's wood. The rings make a satisfying "clink" that plastic or cloth stacking rings lack.
- It's easy for kids to do. We've had other stacking toys (like the Melissa & Doug stacking train) where certain pieces only fit in certain places, and that is frustrating for little ones just figuring out how things work. This one's simple and straight-forward.
- It's inexpensive.

My older son received this when he was about 18 months and played with it quite a bit. Now his younger brother enjoys it, and has been able to put the rings on & off since about 12 months.

(Just a warning: the stick, or "ring holder" as we call it, often gets banged around like a hammer in our house - this is partly why they like this toy so much, but it means close supervision is necessary!)

Customer Review: Nice stacker
Summary: 4 Stars

My 18 month old had outgrown some of his early stacker toys and really enjoys wooden toys so I thought this would be a good choice. I have to say that although I have not had any trouble with paint or color coming off of the one we bought, I would probably not bought it after reading the reviews here. That said, I have and NO problem. My son throws the pieces (of course he does)and even when they hit the tile floor, I have seen no cracking or chipping. The colors seem fast and do not rub off on any of hte other pieces. My son really enjoys stacking these and we are enjoying going over the colors as he plays. I will say that the red ball for the top is pretty hard for him to get on. I would absolutely buy this again and am glad I got it. I do not let my child play with it unattended or walk with the stick. I am afraid of him getting poked.
