I have six children, so as you can imagine this is not my first experience with toy food. In fact, my children have been given quite a few sets of toy food over the years by various family members. All of them were cheap thin plastic that split and caved in in very short order. All of them had lost at least half of their items to the trash can within a year. I've had other Melissa & Doug products in the past, and in general, been very happy with them. So, I decided this year that I would buy the toy food, and I would pay the extra money to get something that should last.
I was thrilled as soon as I opened the packaging. This is heavy-duty plastic. There will be no caving in. No seams to be splitting. This stuff is very solid and very durable. It's also very realistic-looking too, life-size. I just wish they made more toy food in the durable plastic. Almost all of their toy food is wooden like Melissa & Doug Food Groups, which we found to be very artificial-feeling and not nearly as pleasant to play with.
This was a Christmas gift to my then almost 2-year-old son, who absolutely loves it, especially the carrot, which is his new friend. But, his older sisters (7, 5, and 3 1/2) all enjoy it greatly as well. I cannot recommend this set highly enough. My son also got the Melissa & Doug Playtime Fruits set for his birthday a few weeks later, which we were equally happy with. Please start making more durable plastic food, Melissa & Doug!
