Toys and Games Reviews of Melissa & Doug Pizza PartyCustomer Review: A great toy with staying power Summary: 5 Stars
My daughter, then two, received this set for Christmas last Decemeber and she and her 5 year old brother have played with it almost every single day since. The Pizza comes with a large number of round "pizza topping" disks that can be used to "top" the pizza in many combinations. Even the disks themselves are being used constantly as food on play plates, stirred in play pots, and ladled from play soup tureens. The Velcro is very secure, and the pizza pieces make a refreshing "crunch" when the pizza is cut. This is an EXCELLENT and fun toy. I downgraded the durability marks because after 3 months of use the red paint on the pizza cutter and server is flaking off. IN addition, I want to add that this set contains MANY small pieces that can be easily lost. I make certain my children pick up all the pieces every night before we go to bed, but I can see how this toy might be a bit of a pain for some households! Even though the pizza is rated for ages 3-5, my 2-year-old loves this toy. I do not think that the pieces are small enough to pose a choking hazard, and my daughter has never been tempted to put one in her mouth. I also suspect that my five-year-old will still enjoy this toy long after he sees his 6th birthday. This is play food at its highest quality and will probably survive long enough for the grandchildren to use.
Customer Review: Durable-but alot of pieces! Summary: 5 Stars
This toy gets 4 stars because after 1 day my daughter broke out the wooden divider, and the extensive pieces. My daughter loves this toy! It is one of her favorite play foods, and I am about sick of pizza! There are quite a few pieces to the set and I would not recommend this for a household where elements of toys are easily destroyed or lost. The velcro attaches easily. This is a great toy to begin teaching counting and fractions. We also own the Cutting Food Box by Lights, Camera, Interaction. We were initially introduced to these great toy products by my aunt who teaches violin. She uses these toys to explain musical notation and fractions. The utilization of this toy for introductory math has been invaluable for teaching our daughter. Sometimes we don't realize how much she understands these concepts. The parts hold up extremely well to the 2 1/2 year old age group, but I must reiterate - these are not for a family that doesn't not keep up with parts to games or toys. It is also a toy that is best used with hands-on adult expaination. The most educational experience can be derived that way (I guess, as with all things in life.) What is especially fun is when she mixes the 2 toys together and I get a slice of pizza with a carrot or watermelon slice on it.
Customer Review: Manja! Manja! Summary: 5 Stars
Another great Melissa and Doug toy! My daughter just received this for her 2nd birthday and the fun hasn't stopped yet! She loves to take all the toppings off and create a new pizza each time! We're the happy recipients of a big pizza pie all day long!
This pizza set is great for hand-eye coordination and her imagination booms with each new pizza she makes. The wooden utensils (spatula and pizza cutter) feel sturdy and I know they'll last a long time. Even better is the wooden box with lid to store the pieces so they don't get lost or misplaced. I wouldn't recommend this for children under two since the pizza toppings are small and look fun to suck on and eat. Danger lurks ahead for little ones who aren't being supervised!
I'm a huge fan of Melissa and Doug toys because of their great quality. We also own the sandwich making kit, the cutting food box, and the cutting birthday cake (perfect to give as a birthday present)! You just can't go wrong with these toys! Not only fun and imaginative but also educational!
The absolute best part: clean-up time! She has fun sorting out (with my help, of course) the matching toppings and placing them in the same compartment together. Voilà! Another skill is being mastered!
Customer Review: No lid? Are you serious? Summary: 2 Stars
We have the old version of this toy that was given to my son as a hand me down back in 2005 or so. It has always been one of those toys that looks like a great idea but hasn't gotten all that much play in our house. Right now it is in storage as I have 2yo twins and I think they might like it some day, but for now it's just too many pieces to pick up. I keep wondering if I should just toss it - I came on here to see what other people think.
It's a neat idea - I just never saw it played with much here!
It has GOT to have a lid, though. Melissa and Doug products have really gotten worse over time - the veggie cutting box for example used to have a lid No more. The pattern blocks have no lid - I got around that by keeping the blocks in a container that fits in the frame. But it should have a lid. And this should TOTALLY have a lid - there are just too many pieces!
I would rather M&D charge a buck or two more (come on - plexiglass is cheap!) than put out products that look like they should store well but don't.
I almost want to say boycott them until they bring back lids! :-)
Anyway overall really not that great a toy - and there's no way I would buy it new, now, with no lid.
Customer Review: Keeps him busy! Summary: 4 Stars
My son loves pretend kitchen play so this was a perfect addition to his set of kitchen toys. At first he was into the decorating and slicing (and serving) of the pie, which was very exciting for him. But now he has gotten creative with all the toppings - because there are so many he can scoop them up and fill his pretend pot and make soup or oatmeal, etc. Even though there are lots of pieces they are easy to clean up since they aren't too small or messy.
However the first pizza I got got a cracked and split the second day we had it, but I contacted Amazon and they sent a replacement right away and it's been fine. So just keep your receipt, maybe mine was just a bad piece of wood.
Also I feel safe knowing that since my 2 year old (and his baby brother) still puts things in his mouth, Melissa & Doug is a safe company in terms of their wooden toys and non-toxic paints.
I wish the box was more of a covered box, when you get it, it's wrapped in plastic. We slide it underneath other things but of course if it tips the stuff falls out. that's my only complaint but it's pretty minor considering.
