Toys and Games Reviews of Melissa & Doug Magnetic Wooden Alphabet

Customer Review: Great toy
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this for my grandson who is 2 1/2 years old. He loves to try to spell words, and this was a perfect gift because the letters are magnetic so he could put them up on the refrigerator (his mom got him a magnetic board to have at home). He spent a good deal of time running from the family room to the kitchen to proudly display each letter, lining them up in no particular order and then asking, "what that spells?". The bright colors of the letters made it fun. The entire set was a little smaller than I had pictured it to be, but it is a great size for little hands.

Customer Review: THESE CONTAIN LEAD in the Magnets!
Summary: 1 Stars

I thought these were SO COOL, then I had them tested at a local free lead testing for kids toys and they came back POSITIVE. Further research at Healthytoys dot org showed that the magnets contain a MEDIUM level of LEAD!!!. If you child is extra careful not to touch the magnet parts then I guess these are fine, but if your child is like mine and likes to touch the entire thing and then put his fingers in his mouth, these are too dangerous.

Healthytoys dot org lists lots of toys as both safe and unsafe, according to brand. It's good to be careful these days.

Customer Review: Not Perfect, but better than the rest.
Summary: 4 Stars

I purchased these letters because I love the Melissa & Doug brand. THe magnets on these letters are strong enough to hold up art projects. The magnets make up the entire back of the letter not just a small magnet, that can fall out a pose a choking risk. Don't buy the cheap ones. THe only problem is that I recieved two letters that stuck together, and when I pulled them apart the paper came off of the letters. It was not that big of a deal and I took a marker to color where the paper ripped. I still think they are great learning tool and overall the quality is good.

Customer Review: Sturdy letters for easels and refrigerators
Summary: 4 Stars

These letters hold well (don't slide due to weight) on the types of magnetic surfaces kids will generally use them on...easels and fridges, but they are more substantial than other types of letters that I have seen. The box is sturdy and easy to get the letters back into. Only complaint is that there is only one each of the capital and lowercase letters. I know that's a common problem, but would it kill someone to produce a box of letters where you could actually spell several words at a time? (Or one word with the same consonant in it more than once?)

Customer Review: Every kid should have these
Summary: 5 Stars

My kids have both kinds of magnets, these and the plastic letters with the little magnets in them. They love to play with all of them, but they get frustrated when the plastic ones just slide down the fridge, or when the magnets fall off. The plastic ones end up under the fridge; their thicker profile and poor magnets are a bad combination. This kind is MUCH better; they're lightweight and completely covered with magnetic material on the back. They don't fall apart and they stay put! Less frustration for the kids, less hassle for me: It's all good!
