Toys and Games Reviews of Melissa & Doug Magnetic Wooden AlphabetCustomer Review: Great and educational, but the paper has to go! Summary: 3 Stars
I really enjoy everything about these letters except that they have colored paper over the front -1 star AND and now that we have taken all the letters out to show my son the alphabet..I noticed that I am missing a lowercase m, a capital N, and I have an extra capital A letter...that really sucks =(, so bye bye to another star.
They are wooden and have a magnet over the entire back of the letter which is very nice, but the front is colored paper, which my child tries to peel off. If they got into water or the child spills anything on them, the paper will come off and be everywhere.
So make sure your child doesn't put these in their mouth.
The letters stick onto our magnetic board and stay there! They don't slowly try to slide down like the cheap plastic ones!
I LOVE that they have upper case and lower case and the sizes are bigger than the plastic ones as well!
I also like that they are colored, so the child can learn letters and colors!
AND a very BIG plus is the wooden box is reusable AND has a thick clear durable plastic lid that slides in and out so you can store the letters in and they won't spill out if dumped over =)
Customer Review: Good if you use it the right way Summary: 5 Stars
After reading through many of the reviews, I decided to go ahead and buy these as a Christmas present for my 3 year old son to go along with the M&D magnetic letter board/dry erase board (the board only comes with capital letters). It seems that most of the problems the lower star reviewers are having is that the paper comes off if your child chews on the magnets. There was also one 1-star review warning customers of lead in the product. I don't know about the lead, but trust Melissa & Doug enough to let my kids play with them, but only when they're at an age where they're not chewing on their letters. For my son, I let him use Leapfrog products (both the Fridge magnets as well as the Letter Factory DVD in which he learned his alphabet and sounds in 2 weeks) first from age 2-3, but the M&D letters are more for supervised instruction at age 3+ (which is what the M&D packaging recommends anyway). Besides, I think that if you leave them out on the fridge, they WILL get lost or chewed on. I think it's good to keep some toys out of reach and play with them with your child, both to protect the toys as well as emphasize the specialness of that toy, but that's just me.
Customer Review: NOT durable! So disappointed!!! Summary: 2 Stars
We just got these for our 12 month old daughter. I know that it says not for under age 3 because of choking hazard, but after reading other reviews, I was convinced that these weren't likely a choking hazard. And they're not. But they're not durable for a child who puts things in their mouth. The magnets are the entire size of the letter, so ingesting or choking on a small magnet won't happen and the letters are quite large. We put them on the refrigerator about an hour ago and my little one just crawled up with the letter "I" in her mouth. When I took it away, I noticed that all the paper/colored part of the letter has completely melted off or bubbled up. These letters are not going to survive the mouthing stage! I just went and took them all off the refrigerator! She can have them back when she's a little older. The same thing will probably happen if these fall into a puddle of water on the kitchen floor or under the refrigerator door though so be careful.
Customer Review: Just what I was looking for Summary: 5 Stars
As my toddler began showing interest in alphabets, i started looking for some magnetic letters with which she could play while i cooked the meals. I initially was going to purchase the fridgephonics ones but the when i heard the letters , I decided the sound was too annoying to be heard everyday and bought these instead. Like any M&D fan, I did not think twice once i saw these. really nice looking, seem sturdy enough ..most important a whole magnet instead of little pieces which can easily come off. The only con though is that they are too easy to be misplaced.. especially when a toddler grabs and runs them around the house..not a real con of the product though. i emaild the customer service and got a very prompt reply that as of yet they do not sell individual letters so i made a couple of alphabets at home to compensate the ones I lost.
Overall a great product which pleases the eye and is wonderful to handle.
Customer Review: The Word on these Letters Summary: 4 Stars
So far (a month) we are very pleased with these letters.
They are colorful and larger then the plastic letters many are accustomed to. But we like that because although we bought these for our three year old, our one year old is drawn to them as well. (I am not saying there are necessary safe for the little ones, but by a mile harder to swallow then the plastic ones of yesteryear.)
There are some signs of wear, a few bite marks. But no peeling like other reviews had mentioned.
We like that they have upper case and lower case letters so that we have the ability to create words like Jello or Eggs.
The magnet part is the whole back of the letter so they stay stuck really well. They hold papers on the fridge with great reliability but still are easy to unstick (even for little fingers) when you want to move them around.
All in all - worth the money.
