Toys and Games Reviews of Melissa & Doug Food GroupsCustomer Review: Just what we were looking for! Summary: 5 Stars
We purchased this set for my son (15 months) for Christmas. He has suddenly had an obsession with fake food so we thought we'd try it out. I really wanted to get him a kitchen but he's a bit young, so we got a shopping cart and filled it with food. I like this so much better than some of the tacky plastic stuff you see all over the place. Plus this looks mostly like the food and is gender neutral. One word of caution, it's heavy. Since it's made of solid wood, we have to be careful to not let him throw it or bang on the wood floors since some of the edges are a bit sharp. Overall he loves it and so do we. I can't wait to get him a kitchen and more food next year!
Customer Review: Paint chips Summary: 3 Stars
I bought this instead of a plastic product because of my concerns regarding plastics. And I will point out that I could have probably gotten triple the amount of play food had I gone with plastic. But for safety issues, I chose this set instead. However, after a week of active play the paint is already chipping off of several pieces. So I don't have to worry about BPA, just about my children possibly ingesting lead.
All the Melissa and Doug products I've bought over the last 4 years have really seemed sub-par in quality, and of course they're all made in China. My child really enjoys this set but if I find a vendor with a non-MIC product, I will replace it.
Customer Review: fabulous food Summary: 5 Stars
We just got this for our 2 sons' play kitchen. Instead of getting a large set of inexpensive, flimsy, cheaply made plastic food we opted for the smaller set of M&D. It's better quality and very durable, and we're all very happy. The food is fantastic, it's a wonderful variety, good details, realistic coloring, and very sturdy. They love all of it. The set is great to help explain the 4 food groups to the 3 year old, it's fun wooden food, and large enough for the 1 year old to play with.
My only concern is with paint chipping, there was a small chip off one of the pieces, but I put a little clear nail polish over that spot so that it won't chip any further.
Customer Review: Wonderful wooden food set for pretend play Summary: 4 Stars
We bought this set of play food for our 2 yr old to go with her new kitchen after being disappointed with the low quality of plastic food sets. We all love this set. The pros: very sturdy and made to last, takes a beating/frequent use, set includes a little bit of everything, comes with handy wooden baskets to store them in (or your child's rock collection, which our child now uses them for!). Cons = foods are a little old school - certainly not realistic, they are much louder than plastic (esp. when dropped on hardwood floors). Overall, we recommend these as a nice alternative to plastic foods and cardboard boxes that will be dented and destroyed quickly.
Customer Review: Lots of variety in this toy, enjoyable for little ones Summary: 5 Stars
I am so glad I bought this set! There is so much variety here. I have split the set and take half in the car with us and half stay at home in the toy box. My daughter always chooses something from this set to play with first. There are so many interesting shapes and colors. Her favorites are the egg, the swiss cheese, and the hot dog. I was a little worried about wooden toys - unsure if my little one would whack herself on the head or something. But these are as safe as wooden block or large legos. And she really has a great time with them. So far they are tough, withstand chewing and banging with no wear in the paint, and are very easy to clean.
