We started with the Melissa & Doug Vehicle Chunky set - and after my son being so in love with it, we had to get a few more.
This one is SOOO FUN! As he puts the puzzle pieces in, I'll tell him what the animal is and what noises they make and he tries to repeat (for now at least, when I say Cow, he doesn't say mama). Ha!
The puzzle is very sturdy. My son likes to peel off the pictures or rip up the pieces of his previous puzzles, with this - he hasn't succeeded.
What I like about this is that the picture is on the board so he just has to match the shape on the puzzle piece and stick it to the board. It's helping him figure out sizes/shapes and fits. I really like this.
As for complaints of previous reviewers: I don't expect this toy to be like the ones of olden days where they are hand painted and hand made and blah blah blah. It may last though this kiddos childhood, but I'm not planning on this to last through several generations. It does what I need it to do and for the price, come on, it doesn't get any better.

I bought one of these puzzles (Sea Life) a few years ago, and it was a beautiful puzzle. The puzzle pieces were completely painted and smooth. I have seen all the puzzles in this style at libraries and church nurseries and they have all been beautiful. Until now. Melissa and Doug have changed the style of this puzzle. I bought two (Farm and Vehicles) today expecting them to be nice like my old one. The pieces are no longer painted. They have stickers on top of scratchy particle board (i.e. jagged bottom edges and dusty stuff falling all over). The cow use to have defined, carved ears and now it is just a smooth top with a sticker that looks like it was cut wrong. What's more, I got this today, opened it 1 hour ago, and the stickers are already peeling off. My toddler hasn't even put these in his mouth yet--and I won't let him as chunks of the "wood" will come off into his mouth if he did and the stickers would probably disintegrate. I have written the company to let them know that this new idea is a bad one. Don't buy unless they change it back.Customer Review: A Great Puzzle for Developing Toddlers...

Another great Melissa and Doug puzzle for my son! I purchased this puzzle for my son when he was about 18 months, and it was a huge hit. He also loved to practice making the barnyard animal noises while we played with the puzzle.
My son was premature and had some severe speech delays. His occupational therapist and speech therapist BOTH recommended these puzzles. The action of putting the puzzle together is great for the hand/eye coordination and the fat chunky pieces are easy for toddlers to grasp. Also, talking about and saying the names of the everyday items helped improve his vocabulary and speech tremendously!
Melissa and Doug puzzles are made so well. My son played with his puzzles for over 3 years, and we just passed them on to my friend's 2 year old daughter. They still look like new. I owned over 12 of these puzzles and never had an issue with the paint peeling on any of them.

Other reviewers have commented that this puzzle is not solid wood, which is true. The board is plywood and particle board, and the pieces are particle board. It's all very smooth and solid-feeling, and for the price I'm very pleased, but this probably isn't a teething toy-- wait until after 15 months or so. I really like the colorful and cute graphics, the variety of animals for talking about animal sounds, and the fact that the chunky pieces stand up for pretend play-- does double duty to replace our missing Little People farm animals! I also like the format-- no knobs to distract from the pictures. I'm planning to buy a couple of the others as well because my 17 month old definitely prefers this puzzle to the knob and crepe rubber puzzles we already have.Customer Review: Quality sucks!

I saw this puzzle at a friends house and she must have had the older version - wood, handpainted. My daughter really liked to play with it, so I decided to get one. What a dissappointment .. the pictures of the animals are nice, but on this one they are just a cheap paper sticker. The 11 mo old daughter of a friend got hold of the duck. She is still in the age where she sticks everything in her mouth and sure enough the sticker got soaked and peeled off and the duck is without a face now. And I don't know how safe this is to ingest. I know that the box says the toy is for 2+, but if you have playdates with children of different ages those things can happen. Maybe the company could go back to their original values and produce a better quality toy!
