Purchased these for my four year old twins who love puzzles. They worked fine to start, but after a few days they both broke. They weren't subjected to rough play or anything, but now some of the states don't work, and they go off at random times, like when you walk near them, or turn the lights in the room off. I've had to take them out of the kids' rooms because at all hours of the night I would hear "Idaho -- Boise," and "California -- Sacramento." I was extremely dissatisfied with their durability.Customer Review: Fun and educational

I have a 7 year old and twin 4 year olds. I bought it for the 7 year old to work on geography over the summer. All three children love puzzles and love that this puzzle talks. They all use it and it will make learning the US states and capital much easier and more fun. Be careful if you leave it in the family room without the pieces because the lights from the room and TV activate the speaker and the puzzles talks to you all evening long. Keep the puzzle pieces in the puzzle or the puzzle in the closet.Customer Review: Great learning tool for little minds

My 2 1/2 year old loves this puzzle, and yes, he does it by himself. I have a few small complaints keeping it from 5 stars. The multiple states on one piece is a little confusing. I understand it is due to size/shape, but nonetheless. Also, if a piece is accidently left out while on the puzzle rack, a shadow will make it "talk". A little freaky in the dark. Overall though, it is cetainly a puzzle we do over and over and he has learned some state name and where family lives in the process.Customer Review: Talking puzzle

This puzzle is very nice, high quality, it's Melissa and Doug so...It does need batteries, 2AAA's. The puzzle says (IE) "California, capital, Sacramento.", when you put the puzzle piece on the puzzle. The smaller east coast states are grouped together and "said sequencially. It is very great for auditory learners.
Downsides: I wish there was a feature to turn off sound w/o taking out the battery. There are no pix behind the pieces. The puzzle can be a mess if not stored very flat.

My kids don't know the names of the states yet (age 6) but really enjoy exploring maps. This wooden puzzle is great because it says the name of the state as you put them in the puzzle. The kids really do like playing with it. We keep the pieces in a plastic bag so we don't loose any of them, and sometimes the puzzle will speak even when not putting a piece in, but that is pretty minor compared to the enjoyment and learning. Highly recommended.
